    Following the Met Office severe weather warnings about possible tidal surges and flooding on the coast, business owners have been preparing for the worst by boarding up their properties.

    The warning was issued about high tides at about 04:00 and 16:00 on Friday, particularly in the Scarborough, Whitby and Sandsend areas.

    1. People on the Yorkshire coast are preparing for some severe weather after the Met Office issued warnings about possible flooding due to high winds and peak spring tides.

    2. A crowdfunding campaign to raise money for the family of Katie Rough has already raised more than £15,000.

    3. One York family has had a narrow escape as high winds bring down a tree inches away from their house. 

    4. There's been plenty of activity at Bootham Crescent today as striker Richard Brodie leaves the club by mutual consent while his former team-mate Danny Parslow returns to the club on loan.

    5. Fans of Yorkshire cricket may be watching their heroes in more salubrious surroundings following approval for plans to redevelop Headingley

    Plans have been approved for Selby's Police Station to move into the town's civic centre on Doncaster Road.

    The police and council say it will save money after the decision was made by Selby District Council earlier today. 

    Building work should be completed later this year.

    Local residents are being urged to avoid walking along coastal paths and promenades ahead of possible particularly high tides and coastal flooding in North Yorkshire.

    A warning's been issued about high tides at about 04:00 and 16:00 tomorrow, particularly in Scarborough, Whitby and Sandsend.

    Meanwhile, North Yorkshire Council says agencies are working together to visit properties in the at-risk areas in person and are working together to identify any vulnerable people who may be in the areas of risk and may need assistance.

    Several roads on North Yorkshire's coast will be closed from midnight tonight in anticipation of possible particularly high tides and the risk of coastal flooding tomorrow.

    A warning's been issued about high tides at about 04:00 and 16:00 on Friday, particularly in the Scarborough, Whitby and Sandsend areas.

    As a precaution, the A174 at Sandsend,  Pier Road and Church Street in Whitby and Royal Albert Drive, Sandside, Foreshore Road and the Spa approach road in Scarborough will be closed from 12:00, North Yorkshire County Council says.

    Harbour walls and piers at Whitby and Scarborough will also be cordoned off to prevent access.

  13. High tide warning: Property owners urged to set up flood defencespublished at 13:32 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2017

    More on the news that people living on North Yorkshire's coast are being warned over the possibility of particularly high tides along the coast early on Friday morning and again in the afternoon.

    Scarborough, Whitby and Sandsend are all thought to be particularly at risk by the high tides at about 04:00 and at 16:00, according to the Environment Agency, external.

    Property owners are being urged to deploy any flood defences they have - and to obtain sandbags from stockpiles.

    The stockpiles are located at:

    • Staithes - RNLI boathouse and harbour side near fishermen's store
    • Sandsend - council car park at the bottom of Lythe Bank and rear of toilet block adjacent to doctor’s surgery
    • Whitby - Endeavour Wharf adjacent to the old tourist information centre and various locations along Church Street
    • Scarborough - outside The Sands complex, various locations along Sandside and Foreshore Road and at Scarborough Spa

    People living on North Yorkshire's coast are being warned to prepare for high tides and the risk of coastal flooding on Friday.

    High tides at about 04:00 and 16:00 tomorrow are expected to particularly affect Sandsend, Whitby and Scarborough, according to North Yorkshire County Council.

    The predicted gale force winds could result in large waves and high water levels around the times of high tide, the council says.

    Emergency planners have been meeting to prepare for the possibility of flooding along the North Yorkshire coast.

    The Environment Agency, external says strong northerly winds may result in large waves coinciding with peak spring tides over the next couple of days. 

    They've issued a Flood Alert with particular concern about the high tides on Friday morning and Friday afternoon.

    Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Rhinos have asked Leeds City Council to approve plans for a multi-million pound revamp of the Headingley ground at the first time of asking.

    The plans are for a stand which will be used by both the cricket and rugby grounds, as well as a new South Stand for the rugby ground.  

    The council's planning committee is due to discuss the plans at a meeting today.

    If approved, it's hoped work will be completed in time for the grounds to be venues for the 2019 Cricket World Cup and the Rugby League World Cup in 2021.

    Danny Parslow is returning to York City on loan for the rest of the season.

    The veteran defender returns to the club from Cheltenham Town for whom he signed in 2015.  

    Former Welsh Under 21 international Parslow's first stint at City lasted almost a decade and saw him making a total of 315 appearances, scoring four goals.  

    He was a part of Gary Mills' team in 2012 which won the FA Trophy and gained promotion to the Football League via the play-off final at Wembley.

    If you were watching Gary Barlow's new programme, Let It Shine, on BBC1 on Saturday, you'll have seen him give one North Yorkshire lad the surprise of his life. 

    Gary's trying to find the cast for a new musical based on the songs of Take That, and is auditioning lots of hopefuls.

    Tyler Smith, 20, had been nominated for the show by his mum and was helping out at his mum's cafe at Hunmanby Gap when some of the customers persuaded the aspiring singer to sing Take That's hit Rule The World. 

    Tyler was told a camera crew was there because they were filming a documentary about life on the North Yorkshire coast. However, he realised that was a little fib when Gary himself entered the cafe.
