  11. Harrogate woman jailed for multimillion-pound fraudpublished at 15:47 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2017

A North Yorkshire woman has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison after being found guilty of committing investment fraud totalling more than £6m.

Sascha Lee Morris, originally from Killinghall, Harrogate, was found guilty of one count of Fraudulent Trading and two counts of Fraud at Leeds Crown Court.

Ms Morris, 46, committed the crimes between May 2004 and December 2008, during which, she conned a number of investors into losing millions of pounds for her personal gain.

The fraud centred round the investment of off-plan properties in Cyprus.

Between May 2004 and May 2007, Morris was part of a fraudulent business, which  encouraged investors to hand over money to secure the ownership of off-plan properties in Peyia, Emba and Paphos, Cyprus. She convinced them to invest early in the development stages, convincing the investors they could go on to sell the property prior to completion and benefit from significant returns.

When there were no real buyers on completion of the projects, investors were forced to make further payments that they had never expected, and could not afford to make.

Between December 2007 and December 2008, Morris also convinced two groups of investors to plough large sums of cash into a fraudulent company that she said would fund property development in Peyia, Paphos and Larnaca.

The investigating officer in the case, Det Con Nicky Hancock, and Financial Investigator Stephen Wright, both received Judge’s Commendations.

More childcare spaces could be made available in Scarborough because of an injection of government cash.

The seaside town is one of six places in the country which will benefit from the cash.

It's part of plans to offer three and four year olds 30 hours of free care a week. The cash means nurseries and pre-schools will be able to invest in new buildings and improve facilities.
