    2. The Guardianship Bill (aka 'Claudia's Law' after missing York woman Claudia Lawrence) is being put forward in the House of Commons this afternoon by Thirsk & Malton MP, Kevin Hollinrake.

  2. 'Claudia's Law' gets first reading in the Commonspublished at 14:25 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2017

    MPs are being urged to support a new law, backed by the family of Claudia Lawrence, which would allow the relatives of missing people to deal with their financial affairs. 

    Ms Lawrence went missing from her home in York in 2009 and her father Peter has been campaigning for changes to the powers available to relatives left behind.

    It was proposed in the Commons by Kevin Hollinrake, the Conservative MP for Thirsk and Malton, who called for a guardian to be appointed when somebody has been missing for more than 90 days. 

    He told MPs it's a simple change that could be made to ease the suffering of families and the guardian would always have to act in the interests of the missing person:

    Members of Katie Rough's family have thanked the organisers of an online donation site that has raised more than £1,000 since the seven-year-old was found dead in York.

    One member of her family posted a message on the site which said: "Just wanted to once again say thanku to every1 who has donated the generosity of strangers is over whelming on behalf of my sister and the rest of the family thanku x." 

    Another said: "Just want to say on behalf of me and my family it hugely appreciated and we can not thank all enough for being so kind and supporting towards us! And a huge thank you to maggie jackson for starting this amazing idea." 

    The person who set up the page on the gofundme site, Maggie Jackson, said: "The awful death of Katie the little 7 year old girl in york has really saddened me, I can't stop thinking about what her mum and family will be going through."

  4. 'Get ready for cold weather snap' - North Yorkshire health bodypublished at 13:36 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2017

    People in Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby are being urged by the local Clinical Commissioning Group to prepare for the cold weather conditions due to hit the region, external.

    The Met Office has issued a weather warning, external about rain, snow, wind, fog and ice to hit the UK over the next five days.

    Britain's politicians have been reacting to the death of Katie Rough in York.

    Speaking in the House of Commons, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "I'm sure the whole House will join in heartfelt condolences to the family and friends following the tragic death of seven-year-old Katie Rough in York earlier this week. "I think it's right we send condolences to her family."

    Prime Minister Theresa May said: "I also join you in expressing condolences to the family and friends of little Katie, who died so tragically."

    More from York Magistrates' Court where a teenage girl has been remanded into secure accommodation after being charged with the murder of seven-year-old Katie Rough.

    The defendant, who was flanked by two security guards and a youth offending team manager, stood in the centre of the glass-fronted dock and said nothing.

    She stared straight ahead as her solicitor answered questions about her name and address.

    The girl, who was wearing an oversized grey sweatshirt and had long brown hair, will appear before Leeds Crown Court on Friday.

    A 15-year-old girl has appeared in court in York charged with the murder of seven-year-old Katie Rough.

    The teenager was arrested after Katie was found seriously injured on a playing field in the city on Monday afternoon. She later died in hospital.

    The accused girl was remanded in custody by York magistrates and is due to appear at Leeds Crown Court on Friday.

    She has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

    A decision is due to be made later on proposals to use birds of prey to scare off seagulls in Scarborough and Whitby.

    Councillors are considering employing a specialist firm to operate in the area over the next five years at a meeting this afternoon. 

    It's part of a number of measures to tackle so-called "gull muggings" which have plagued the coast over recent years.

  11. Tadcaster Bridge repairs: Are they on track?published at 10:15 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2017

    They're up against it in Tadcaster at the moment with work going on around the clock to get the flood-damaged bridge over the river repaired and ready to re-open by the end of this month.

    Officials in charge of the project had set a re-opening date of Friday 27 January for the bridge, which collapsed during the floods just over a year ago.

    However, it's weather-dependent as any time that temperatures dip below freezing, work has to stop - and the forecast over the next few days isn't looking good.

    This may scupper plans to celebrate the re-opening which include a lantern parade, blessing ceremony, fireworks display and battle re-enactment, external.

    We can all get a bit forgetful at times - misplacing car keys, mobile phones or even articles of clothing.

    You'd think that anyone with dentures would be careful to hang on to their teeth, but at a shop in North Yorkshire that's not the case.

    Staff at Helmsley Outdoors are currently in possession of some false teeth left by a customer and are eager to reunite them with their owner.

  14. Traffic and travel: Delays on East Coast Main Linepublished at 09:19 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2017

    Signalling problems at Haymarket Station in Edinburgh have had a knock-on effect on East Coast Main Line trains, with delays on some services of up to 45 minutes.

    The problem has been resolved but delays will continue for at least the next hour or so.

    Plans for a new law named after missing York woman Claudia Lawrence will be presented to the House of Commons today.

    Ms Lawrence went missing on 18 March 2009 at the age of 35 while on her way to work in York.

    The Guardianship Bill, external is being put forward by Thirsk and Malton Conservative MP Kevin Hollinrake.  

    It's known as "Claudia's Law", and would allow the families of people who've disappeared to take control of their loved one's finances. 

    Her father Peter Lawrence has long campaigned for a change in the law.

    The windy weather's currently causing some problems on the roads.

    The A66 between Scotch Corner and Kemplay Bank (A6) is currently closed to high-sided vehicles due to strong winds.

    And heading from North Yorkshire into West Yorkshire, the A658 Pool Bank New Road in Pool is currently blocked and there's heavy traffic at the A660 Leeds Road junction because of a fallen tree.

    Happily, there are currently no delays reported on trains out of York Station, external
