  4. Futurist decision criticisedpublished at 10:38 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2017

Reaction keeps coming in to the decision by Scarborough Borough Council to demolish the Futurist Theatre.

The council voted by 22-21 (with one abstention) last night to apportion £4m of council money to demolish the historic theatre and prop up the cliff directly behind it.

Rebecca Morland is from The Theatres Trust, which works to protect theatres around the UK. She believes that there were other options and ways of bringing profitable productions to the theatre:

The venue has played host to many big names in its past such as The Beatles, Shirley Bassey and Ken Dodd but had fallen on hard times in recent years before closing in 2014.

Comedian Tommy Cannon, one half of double act Cannon & Ball who played the theatre many times, told me he thinks the decision is the wrong one:

Work to demolish the Futurist Theatre in Scarborough could begin as soon as September.

It comes after councillors voted for £4m to be set aside for the work at a meeting last night.

The decision comes despite strong opposition from campaigners who wanted to save the landmark venue.

Elaine Pickstock lives on the slope above the Futurist and she says she fears for her home and for her own safety if the theatre is demolished:

That's according to borough councillor Mike Cockerill following yesterday's vote to demolish it
