Summary

  1. Lions back on the ballpublished at 00:04 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

Detroit Lions 7-0 San Francisco 49ers

Jahmyr Gibbs gets his first run of the game as Detroit start their second drive of the game in decent field position, and it's a nice lively run for a first down.

Gibbs and fellow rusher David Montgomery have had terrific seasons and if Detroit get further ahead they'll become a serious issue for San Fran.

  2. field goal

Field goal - No good!published at 00:01 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

Detroit Lions 7-0 San Francisco 49ers

Rookie kicker Jake Moody misses wide right from 48 yards out when the 49ers drive stalls and forces them to take a shot.

It's a pretty perfect kicking day so no excuses, but Moody's not exactly been reliable this season.

    Perfect start for Detroit continues.

  3. Deebo's backpublished at 23:54 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

Deebo Samuel takes a nice catch and that'll be a relief for the 49ers fans to see their explosive receiver/runner back on the field.

Why? Well, when Samuel has started and managed to finish a game this season the 49ers have gone 12-1, and when he's either missed a game or left it injured, they're 1-4.

    Influential.

  4. Postpublished at 23:51 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

Detroit Lions 7-0 San Francisco 49ers

Brock Purdy could've been intercepted had his receiver Brandon Aiyuk not bailed him out but switching to defence when Cam Sutton was about to pick off the Niners quarterback.

    Tense start.

  5. Hometown boy Hutchinson helped make Lions goodpublished at 23:50 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

The biggest threat to 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will come from defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who grew up on the outskirts of Detroit.

He came into the 2022 draft as one of the top prospects and when Jacksonville selected fellow defensive end Travon Walker with the first pick, it gave the Lions the chance to take the local boy with the second.

Speaking at his first news conference as Lions coach three years ago, Dan Campbell said the team would "take on the identity of this city", which had been downtrodden for decades, and would "bite your kneecaps off" when they were knocked down.

And Hutchinson has epitomised that team, picking up 21 sacks in his first two years - 11.5 this season.

  6. Lions set the tonepublished at 23:48 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

Detroit Lions 7-0 San Francisco 49ers

Jason Bell, former NFL cornerback, on Sky Sports: "Detroit set the tone right there. Obviously we know they are going to be physical in the running game and that’s what they did."

Former NFL tight end Greg Olsen on Fox: “This is one of the most explosive offences in the league and right out of the gate they did it on the ground.”

Touchdown - Lions!published at 23:45 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

    What a start!

Jameson Williams takes the ball on a reverse and he puts his foot on the gas and bursts right through the 49ers defence, sprinting away for a 42-yard touchdown for Detroit.

Just the fourth play of the game and the Lions show their big-play ability early doors - and Williams isn't among their usual big-hitters, but my word he can shift.

Once he turned on the jets he was like a hot knife through butter - that's just piled the pressure on the home side with a perfect start for Detroit.

  9. Kick-off - Resurgent Goff or Mr Irrelevant?published at 23:43 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

Jared Goff went to a Super Bowl with the Rams but was deemed surplus to requirements and traded to Detroit - but after a disastrous 0-10 start to his Lions career is back chasing a slice of history.

Only four QBs have previously made a Super Bowl with two different teams - and how Goff would love to prove plenty of people wrong by becoming the fifth.

Brock Purdy has plenty of doubters but it is his second NFC title game in just his second season.

But who have you got? Thumbs up for Purdy and thumbs down for Goff.

Brock Purdy's detractors have dismissed him as just a 'game manager' or 'system quarterback', and claim the 49ers' dominance is mainly down to coaching mastermind Kyle Shanahan and their star-studded roster, which has reached a third straight NFC Championship game.

In November they boosted that roster by trading for Chase Young, adding him to a defence that already featured the likes of defensive end Nick Bosa and linebacker Fred Warner.

And on the other side of the ball they are stacked with weapons. Brandon Aiyuk had 1,342 receiving yards this season, Deebo Samuel had a combined 1,117 yards and Christian McCaffrey is favourite to be named Offensive Player of the Year.

Not only did he have a league-high 1,459 rushing yards but the running back also had 339 receiving yards and a combined 21 TDs.

The Detroit Lions are the feel-good story of the season so far, as they look to make their first-ever Super Bowl - they're one of four not to yet make it and the only NFC side.

It's only their second Conference Championship game, the first came in 1991, and enigmatic coach Dan Campbell has them playing some terrific football.

Amon-Ra St Brown can catch anything, Jared Goff is reborn and rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs looks electric.

From one of just two sides to have winless 0-16 seasons and a laughing stock in the league, to the brink of a Super Bowl, this is quite the turnaround in Detroit. Can they go all the way?

The Kansas City Chiefs will play in the Super Bowl for a fourth time in five years after beating the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 in the NFL's Conference Championships.

The defending champions have had to play on the road during this season's play-offs but have still shown their championship quality by winning at Buffalo and Baltimore to return the NFL's big game.

The Chiefs now have the chance to cement their dynasty by winning a third NFL title in five years and becoming the first back-to-back champions since the New England Patriots in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings quarterback telling Sky Sports how Brock Purdy will play this evening after he was injured in the NFC Championshop game last season:

"He will want to stay right in the moment and will only be thinking about the Lions' defence and getting to the Super Bowl.

"But what a difference a year makes. Last year, the 49ers were running so hot and they thought they could go into Philadelphia and win with how talented their roster is and how well they were playing. But those goals and dreams were dashed.

"A year later, now he is hosting the same game after having an MVP-calibre season and leading the league in quarterback rating.

"It is safe to say his elbow is fully healed and he is ready to make amends by taking his team back to the Super Bowl."

  18. Goff & Purdy at opposite ends of draft lotterypublished at 23:36 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

Detroit Lions @ San Francisco 49ers (23:30 GMT)

Since being thrust into the role of San Francisco's starting quarterback late last season, Brock Purdy has made a mockery of all the time and effort that goes into assessing draft hopefuls.

He was the last player picked in the 2022 draft, with which comes the title of 'Mr Irrelevant', but he's been anything but since coming into the team. Tonight he will play in his second NFC Championship game in two seasons.

He still has his critics, but getting one over a quarterback who was selected with the first pick of the 2016 draft will go a little bit further to proving them all wrong. Jared Goff did lead the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl in his third season but just two years later the Rams were happy to let him go. Even with the first pick there's never any guarantee you'll get a franchise quarterback in the draft. It really can be a lottery.

Yet Goff has rebuilt his confidence with the Lions and led their turnaround under Dan Campbell, with both Goff and Purdy being in the top five for passing yards and touchdowns this season.

Here are some mind-blowing stats that demonstrate the gulf in play-off pedigree for San Francisco and Detroit:

    • Before this month, San Francisco had five times more Super Bowls win (five) as Detroit had play-off wins (one, in 1992)
    • Detroit have more play-off wins this month (two) than they have in the rest of the Super Bowl era - started 1966
    • In 30 NFL games (regular season and post-season), Brock Purdy has played in as many NFC Championship games (two) as Detroit have in 58 years
