The consensus seems to be that India have nudged themselves ahead after a gripping day but you'd be a fool to write either side off, given what we have seen in this series.

Day three, as ever, will be massive.

India bowler Prasidh Krishnas says he just told Joe Root "you are looking in great shape" during their row.

"Then there turned out to be a lot of abuse and all of that," he told BBC Test Match Special.

"It is all good. We are mates off the field."

Over the course of five Tests, over the course of six and a half weeks when it's been very tight and there's been some great cricket, you're going to get some issues like this. I've never looked down and thought it stepped over the line. But clearly they're at each other. Both sets of players and its almost like they've had enough of each other.

They're looking forward to when they can shake hands and I'm sure they'll have drink afterwards.

Joe Root was angry. But why wouldn't you try and upset him? I don't know if it was a plan, but if it was it worked, because Root only got 29 when he usually averages 60 against India - so it was a success. Fair play to Krishna, I just hope whatever he said was within the line and was just good old honest sledging which is allowed. It definitely got Joe Root out his bubble.

In a series full of such moments, there were three obvious points of tension between the teams today.

First Akash Deep put his arm around Ben Duckett after dismissing him. Then Joe Root was clearly angered by something Prasidh Krishna said.

Finally there was the confrontation between Sai Sudharsan and Ben Duckett late on after India's number three fell.

India are a little ahead in this game, it's been a low scoring game. India are ahead, for sure, but I think at the end of the day its going to be about pressure.

So far in this series this India side have handled pressure well, and it's been a long tour - one more innings to go. You have to keep everything else away and just bat normally.

The pitch will get better, it's just about how you handle it. At Lords, it wasn't handled well, at Old Trafford it was handled very well by India.

We can only wait to see how costly the England drops in this evening session prove to be.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was put down twice and Sai Sudharsan once. There was a missed run-out chance too.

England were 92-0 in the 12th over and from that moment on, you talk about Root's sweep of Bumrah changing that game, I just wonder whether Ben Duckett's sweep did the same here and whether they went too hard. It was such a high risk shot. Him and Crawley played beautifully, and they could've come down a gear and they didn't - that annoyed me a bit.

  9. Gill's captaincy 'outstanding'published at 19:31 British Summer Time 1 August

The captaincy of Shubman Gill was outstanding in the afternoon because he brought the field in and he said to the England players, 'if you're going to play good shots, you're going to be rewarded but if you don't then there's a chance we'll take one or two wickets.'

There was a couple of really good deliveries from Siraj to get rid of Ollie Pope who was playing nicely and Joe Root who was playing the Joe Root way. Those were two big moments in the afternoon session.

After lunch India were superb. They bowled England out for 247 when a score above 300 looked nailed on.

A bit more needle, between Prasidh Krishna and Joe Root, sparked it. We await more info on what upset Root.

Mohammed Siraj was superb and took 4-86 as he knocked over England's middle order.

When Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley were romping along, this match looked like it was going only one way.

They Bazballed as they love to do to put on 92 in 12.5 overs. Even after Ben Duckett fell, England were 109-1 in 16 overs at lunch.

I'd rather be India with the fact that England don't have Chris Woakes and tomorrow the sun's going to shine. You would think this pitch would quieten down but if it stays like this it's going to be a great game.

Its had movement throughout and the standout partnership of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley looked like it exploded England ahead and then India remembered to bowl at the stumps, they bowled a bit fuller.

How long ago do Gus Atkinson's wickets this morning feel? England wrapped up the India innings for the addition of only 20 runs this morning.

It was the ideal start but since then India have fought back brilliantly.

Quite rightly Ollie Pope says no to bringing on the spinners. That means it will be stumps.

    What an enthralling day.

It looks like the umpires are getting twitchy about this light. Ollie Pope is being asked to bowl his spinners, it seems.

It's dark now. The floodlights are starting to take hold.

I really don't mind Akash Deep playing a few shots, because he's better off that way rather than defending.

I don't think he had any idea where that was going though.
