Summary

  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18.4 overs

    Duckett c Kumara b Jayasuriya 40 (Eng 82-3)

Soft. England gift Sri Lanka a third wicket.

Joe Root nailed the conventional sweep but Ben Duckett goes for the reverse. It's a shot that he usually plays very well but this time, it sails straight to the fielder who is perfectly placed at deep point.

Looking forward to the responses to this one...

  2. Eng 82-2published at 18.1 overs

First look at the spinner before lunch, and Prabath Jayasuriya is immediately swept for four by Joe Root.

    Classy.

Interesting point by Andy Zaltzman about how often Pope is out in first 25 balls - what is his average once he gets to his 26th ball and beyond?

    Chris in Northumberland

With thanks to CricViz's Ben Jones - Ollie Pope averages 42 in Test cricket across innings where he faces 26 or more balls.

    Andy Zaltzman
    Statistician on Test Match Special

It was Ollie Pope's 84th Test innings and the 32nd time he's been out of in his first 20 balls, that's 38%.

Of all the 112 batters who've batted in the England top seven 25 times, three have a higher failure rate, though none were specialists in the top order: Godfrey Evans, mostly batting at seven post-war, Craig White and George Ulyett, who played in the first-ever Test match.

  5. Eng 76-2published at 18 overs

The boundaries have dried up a little but there's no pressure building on England, with Duckett and Root successfully rotating the strike to keep things moving.

Duckett has been made to be patient, being kept at the non-striker's end for quite a lot of this partnership but has still found time for some cracking shots like this one.

  6. Eng 73-2published at 17 overs

    Duckett 38, Root 16

Bit of movement from Lahiru Kumara, who's getting the ball to nip back in by using the Lord's slope to his advantage.

Joe Root is equal to it with his defence, before Kumara gets one to pass the outside edge to conclude a nice battle within that over.

When you're the captain, you're supposed to be the calm individual that soaks up the pressure. But what I saw today with Ollie Pope, he didn't create that. He doesn't send the message that he's in control when he comes in, and that needs to be eradicated.

Ben Duckett's Test average at Lord's has ticked over 100.

  9. Eng 71-2published at 16 overs

Three runs from a tidy Milan Rathnayake over.

Sri Lanka have been much better after they got that first breakthrough of Dan Lawrence, but you feel like they need three wickets before lunch to really justify the decision at the toss...

  10. Eng 68-2published at 15 overs

Just the single off the over, as Lahiru Kumara impresses again.

The ball has just started to nip around a bit more now than it was at the start of the day.

When you've won the toss and chosen to bowl, those are the little things that need to go your way. Particularly against Joe Root.

    Oooh!

Umpire's call saves Joe Root and Sri Lanka keep the review.

    Headaches indeed!

Sri Lanka review an lbw appeal, which is given not out and looks to be missing leg.

But because it's Joe Root, they're keen to have a look.

  15. Eng 67-2published at 14.1 overs

A play and a miss from Joe Root?! Do my eyes deceive me?

Lahiru Kumara's extra pace continues to cause a few headaches.

  16. Eng 67-2published at 14 overs

Oh, flashy. The first loose shot from Ben Duckett really, as he gets a lucky outside edge that flies aerially past the fielder at point for a couple.

He corrects himself with solid defensive shots to end the over. A decent partnership is building between Duckett and Joe Root now, with some lovely shots played rather than too much 'Bazball' walloping.

  17. Eng 65-2published at 13 overs

    Duckett 35, Root 11

    Oh, great shot.

Lahiru Kumara started the over well, beating Ben Duckett's outside edge, but can't back it up. Too full, and Duckett slams it for four.

Kumara is unhappy with himself, letting out a yelp of frustration at his error.

  18. Postpublished at 12:07 British Summer Time 29 August

Yeah, it's not a dismissal that Ollie Pope will enjoy watching back.

Particularly if the likes of Duckett and Root go on to cash in on this good batting pitch.

Ollie Pope has scored three consecutive single figure scores prior to today. 17 innings this year, 11 times he's been out in his first 25 balls.

Has there every been a more frustrating England cricketer to watch than Ollie Pope? All the talent but the total inability to harness it. There’s only one word I can think of to discuss his career. Hick-ish.
