Rob Meech: Ollie Pope just isn’t a number three. He’s too skittish at the crease and doesn’t have a good enough technique. I’m surprised Harry Brook hasn’t been elevated to first drop. He can score quickly and is also solid enough to keep out the good balls.

One area of concern for England will be Ollie Pope's record against elite Test teams.

Batting at three against India he averages 27, while he's only scored 90 runs in four innings against Australia.

He'll need to improve that with five Tests at home against India next year before the Ashes down under.

The BBC canteen is serving chicken burgers, for the record.

Was probably a bit too close to this morning's breakfast wrap, so England best put on a display this afternoon to ward off an afternoon nap.

    Thanks Ffion.

I'll expertly guide anyone through a lunch break.

Cricket wise, my offering is much shakier.

Without Ben Stokes, leaving Chris Woakes at seven, England's tail is a little longer than usual.

So the partnership between Joe Root and Harry Brook is a very important one. Thankfully, it's going pretty well so far.

A good session of play. England will be disappointed with a couple of soft wickets, but don't take anything away from Sri Lanka. They've put the hosts under pressure.

An interesting morning. Sri Lanka will definitely settle for that after winning the toss and bowling first.

Ben Duckett was the most recent batter to fall, frustratingly having made his way to 40 pretty easily.

It looks like a bit of a silly dismissal, given that it was the spinner's first over, but he plays the reverse sweep so well usually and the odds were in his favour. He gets a lot of success with it, so it's a fair option, but he just got this one badly wrong.

However, on this pitch, he could end up feeling like he's really missed out.

Good ball. But not a great shot by Brook. He wafted at it.

  12. Lunch - Eng 97-3published at 24 overs

A testing over for Harry Brook but he manages to safely steer England to lunch.

Asitha Fernando gets one to bounce sharply outside off, and Brook is lucky to get away with it, before he leaves one that just nips in slightly and isn't too far away from the stumps.

It looked like it was going to be a long morning for Sri Lanka after an uninspiring start, but they will be pretty happy with three wickets.

  13. Eng 97-3published at 23 overs

Lahiru Kumara surprises Joe Root with a bouncer, which he does glove behind him, but safely away from the keeper.

Kumara has been a big asset for Sri Lanka here with a yard of added pace to the others.

We'll have time for one more over before lunch.

  14. Eng 94-3published at 22 overs

Opener Asitha Fernando returns for a quick burst before lunch.

A decent, if unthreatening, over with just three from it as the TV cameras are far more preoccupied with following Ben Stokes' trudge around the boundary to get to the nets.

A roar of anguish from Lahiru Kumara as he goes too full, and Joe Root is not missing out on that.

Caressed through the covers and gratefully applauded by the Lord's crowd, but with a rather tame effort of the "Rooooot" chant echoing around.

  17. Eng 87-3published at 20 overs

A gorgeous back-foot punch from Harry Brook brings him his first boundary in fine style.

Do Brook and Root provide England's most aesthetically-pleasing partnership?

He'll be absolutely kicking himself. He's done all the hard work, seen off the new ball, then he's absolutely smashed it to the one man on the boundary. He's got too much on it, gone straight down his throat. He'll be absolutely spewing.
