Summary

  1. drinks break

    Eng 58-2published at 12 overs

    First hour done.

Sri Lanka will be happy, taking those two wickets after choosing to bowl first, but the second hour will decide whether we'll be eating our words or not.

Ben Duckett and Joe Root have both looked confident from their first ball. Time for a drink.

Joe Root's defence does deflate bowlers. They try something different and he just leans on it. That's why he's scored so many runs.

  3. Eng 54-2published at 11 overs

Punched down the ground for four more by Joe Root in his usual, effortless style.

Meanwhile, both Rocky Flintoff and Archie Vaughan are playing in the County Championship today, with the latter making his first-class debut for Somerset.

    I feel old.

Vineet Jacob: Hard to be harsh on Lawrence. Batting out of position - opening - which is arguably the most difficult spot in Test cricket in England. But it has to be said he hasn't looked convincing so far.

The ball hasn't done much at all but England have lost two wickets from pretty soft shots.

I do feel for Dan Lawrence, being asked to bat out of position having been England's reserve batter on so many occasions. Sri Lanka have figured him out already, only three innings in.

  6. Eng 46-2published at 10 overs

    As easy as you like.

Poor from Asitha Fernando, gifting Joe Root a half-volley on his pads to clip away for four precious runs from his first ball.

He was in no position to play that shot. No freedom with the arms, but a brilliant catch - under blue skies, not easy to judge. Two down, Sri Lanka on a roll - if they get two more before lunch they'll say it was a good decision to bowl. And England don't bat that deep.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 9.2 overs

    Pope c De Silva b A Fernando 1 (Eng 42-2)

Oh dear. This is a horrible dismissal.

A long, slow walk back for Ollie Pope as he gets in a complete tangle trying to play a shorter ball from Asitha Fernando.

It's not particularly quick but has perhaps taken him by surprise, as the ball flies off the top edge and high into the air.

Dhananjaya de Silva stays calm, steadies himself after tracking backwards and takes the catch at square leg.

Can you imagine being an English opener on the county scene, having a good season and then seeing Dan Lawrence given an opportunity over you? He's not a natural opener and has failed almost every time he plays for England.

The appeal was instant but just as quickly died away.

Love this from Lahiru Kumara. He's fired up and has injected a bit of life into Sri Lanka's difficult morning.

He cuts Ollie Pope in half with a beauty before an appeal for caught behind, but it's quite obvious that Pope's bat had hit the turf.

It's the first maiden of the day.

I feel sorry for Dan Lawrence. A very talented player, just not quite good enough for England. Reminds me of Ravi Bopara and James Vince. Time to move on, how about Rocky Flintoff?

  13. Eng 39-1published at 8 overs

Some seam movement from nowhere sees the ball fly past the keeper and the slips, all the way for four byes.

Other than that, another solid over from Milan Rathnayake, with Ollie Pope getting off the mark with a single.

Lahiru Kumara has a very different build to other Sri Lanka bowlers. He's strong, stocky, bowls into the pitch. He's coming back from injury, if he can stay fit he's important for Sri Lanka as others can't give you that oomph.

  15. Eng 33-1published at 7 overs

Oh! This is an inspired change.

Bit of bounce and Ollie Pope fends at one outside off stump, luckily avoiding the edge.

This is the sort of firepower that Sri Lanka have been lacking this morning. England - particularly Ben Duckett - have looked very comfortable up until now.

That was a nothing shot. Dan Lawrence will be very disappointed with that. It's just pitched on a length, the previous delivery went past the edge and he reacted to that, coming down the wicket and feeling for it. Out of the blue!

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 6.5 overs

    Lawrence c Maduskha b Kumara 9 (Eng 33-1)

    And the bowling change works!

Finally, something for Sri Lanka to celebrate. It was a poor start to the over but Lahiru Kumara gets his reward for improving swiftly.

A hint of extra pace, and he tempts Dan Lawrence into another nervous poke outside the off stump, nicking it through to the keeper.

Stand-in skipper Ollie Pope makes his way to the middle.

  18. Eng 33-0published at 6.3 overs

An early bowling change sees Lahiru Kumara come in to the attack, replacing Vishwa Fernando in the Sri Lanka XI from Old Trafford.

He starts with a loosener for Ben Duckett to clip off his pads for three, before correcting himself to get Lawrence nibbling at a good ball outside the off stump.

    A rare false shot.

It was a strange decision by Dhananjaya de Silva to insert England, but recent Lord's Tests suggest there's still a route to victory. Four of the last five matches here have been won by the side bowling first, albeit with South Africa the only visiting side to do so.

It's a semi-defensive shot, but he did time it nicely. It shouldn't really be going for four, but it did!
