Summary

  1. Eng 30-0published at 6 overs

Even the defensive prods are finding the boundary.

Dan Lawrence gets four more, straight down the ground, as easy as you like.

We're going to be discussing the result of the toss for the entire duration of this Test, just to warn you. Firmly in the "shocker" category after just half an hour.

One thing that's noticeable is the difference in the speed of the outfield compared to Old Trafford. Sri Lanka could hold England a bit there, they've got fielders in the deep today but it's not necessarily helping.

After four overs you don't normally see just two slips, a gully and a ring field. I think Dhananjaya de Silva might wish he could go back 45 minutes.

  4. Eng 23-0published at 5 overs

    Oh, streaky from Lawrence.

He gets his first boundary, attempting a cover drive but it squirts off the inside edge and somehow ends up at deep square.

It gets to the ropes in the blink of an eye, all signs suggesting that the pitch and the outfield is an absolute belter.

It feels like Sri Lanka gambled all their chips on the first hour and a half of the Test match. But sport has ways of confounding you...

  6. Eng 19-0published at 4 overs

Decent recovery from Rathnayake, with just a single from it to Dan Lawrence, who gets himself off the mark with a single to mid-wicket.

The sun is shining and Lord's looks an absolute picture today.

This is Sri Lanka's ninth Test at Lord's, they've drawn the last five. England last beat them here in 1991.

  8. Eng 18-0published at 3.1 overs

    Frustratingly sloppy from Sri Lanka.

Milan Rathnayake sends one down the leg side, beyond the reach of the keeper and it trickles away for four bonus runs for England.

  9. Eng 14-0published at 3 overs

Expensive over, as Duckett dabs four more down to deep third.

Asitha Fernando got him out in both innings at Old Trafford but the England opener has sent an early message of intent here.

It's looking ominous for the visitors already...

Glorious shot. It's going to be a good wicket, isn't it?

  11. Eng 10-0published at 2.2 overs

    Two in two!

Straight down the ground this time. Those two quiet overs were just to get his eye in!

  12. Eng 6-0published at 2.1 overs

    Half-volley, four.

Ben Duckett helps himself to England's first boundary, slashed through the covers.

  13. Eng 2-0published at 2 overs

Tidy start from Sri Lanka as Milan Rathnayake also starts well, just the single from the over.

But there's not much swing or seam movement. I suspect England are just settling in for the long haul.

Sri Lanka's toss decision might be based on stats. No team has won the toss, batted first and won the match in a Test on this ground since 2019, which is quite a long time when you consider there's two Tests a year here. Even that match in question was England beating Ireland.

But, to the best of my knowledge, available stats do not take into account the overhead conditions. Ollie Pope was adamant that this is a venue to look up, not down. The blue sky suggests bat first, right?

  15. Eng 1-0published at 1 over

It's been well documented how little Test match cricket (or multi-day cricket generally) Sri Lanka have played in the build-up to this series, so it'll be interesting to see how their bowlers get on after an intense opener.

There's an optimistic lbw appeal against Dan Lawrence, playing around a straight one (again) but it's way too high.

  16. Eng 1-0published at 0.1 overs

Asitha Fernando was brilliant at Old Trafford, taking six wickets across both innings and causing England plenty of problems.

His first ball is full and straight, and Ben Duckett prods down the ground for one and England are on their way.

Only people like Michael Vaughan are allowed to touch the pitch. He said it was a bit damp, a bit slow. Maybe it'll speed up.

Sri Lanka's legendary batter Mahela Jayawardene has the honour of ringing the five-minute bell at Lord's, sporting some cool sunglasses and receiving a warm round of applause.

The anthems follow, and we're ready to go. Dan Lawrence and Ben Duckett make their way to the middle.

It will do a bit in the first hour, it always does. But I am very surprised to see Sri Lanka bowl.

Also, they could have brought their spinners into the game if they had England batting fourth. Sometimes you've got to be brave with captaincy and I don't think that's a brave decision.

If they roll England out, I'll hold my hands up and say I was wrong.

It doesn't look like it's got as much grass on it, as we've become used to with Lord's pitches.

Sri Lanka want England three down early, that's what they're thinking.
