Joe Root knows how to bat against India. He knows how to bat at this venue with eight Test hundreds.

I received confused looks when I said before play that I'd feel comfortable defending 250 on this pitch. I'm still standing by it.

More good running helps Joe Root accumulate.

I feel that this is going to be the deciding session of the game - this partnership. England need around 250 to win.

    Root 23, Stokes 6

Cut away, cut away for four by Ben Stokes to make it nine runs from Siraj's first over after lunch.

England have come out looking to be positive.

That lbw appeal was the correct decision, by the way. It hit Root outside the line of off stump.

  5. Eng 105-4published at 26.3 overs

Here's a big appeal for lbw against Joe Root as Mohammed Siraj squeezes the ball onto his pad.

The umpire says no. India have a long think about a review but decide against it.

    I reckon that's a wise call.

Harry Brook was counter-attacking and he was playing some good shots but there are times when it doesn't always pay off. Playing scoop shots is one thing as it brought him rewards but playing a sweep was the wrong call.

If you thought you may get an afternoon of calmer, more sedate cricket you may be disappointed.

Ben Stokes swishes and misses and then is beaten by a ball that climbs off the pitch.

He reacts like a man who has been given an electric shock as he jolts and squirms.

  8. Eng 100-4published at 25.2 overs

Cheers at Lord's as Joe Root nudges England up to 100.

We are seeing a lot of action in the first ball and the pitch has changed. There is a lot more in it for the seamers and England will be looking at 250 with at least maybe 90 runs in this session.

  10. dropped catch

    Eng 99-4published at 25 overs

    Now then!

Joe Root nicks the first ball and, after all of the praise I have given his keeping this morning, it is spilled by stand-in keeper Dhruv Jurel.

It was a no-ball anyway, though. Deep had overstepped! It's a drop but not one that matters.

It might be the first time in the match we're going to restart without burning sunshine.

Akash Deep is going to start proceedings from the Pavilion End. I thought it might be Mohammed Siraj.

India's players are already out warming up in front of me.

They're keen to get at England again. The clouds have come in a little.

It's obviously an ugly look for Harry Brook.

My question is whether he should have switched from playing a straight-batted ramp to a cross-batted sweep.

Playing in the way he did carried a far bigger risk against full balls. India changed the field to influence it. Maybe Brook should have put it away entirely.

The same people annoyed at Brook's shot would undoubtedly be praising him for taking the game away from India if it had come off. You can't have it both ways is what the England team must be thinking of this reaction.

Brook is the modern day KP as a batsman, genius ability with sometimes brainless tendencies. One thing is for sure, he is box office.

I wonder which player would be the best live-texter.

The obvious answer is Joe Root. He can do everything. Harry Brook is a man of few words, unlike my colleague Mike.

He doesn't have many things over Harry but I'll give him that.

    Thanks Mike.

Maybe I should make an offer to the England comms department to see if Zak Crawley fancies a shift running our live page.

    It would be great fun.

For those pondering Zak Crawley's place in the side, it's worth reading my colleague Matthew Henry's analysis of the opener's batting, written after the first innings.

Speaking of which, here's the man himself to take you through the afternoon session.

(Matt, that is, not Zak - although the latter does now have a bit of time on his hands)

Six of the seven highest run-scorers in Division One of the County Championship this season are openers.

    • Dom Sibley: 976 runs, 44.93 strike-rate
    • Haseeb Hameed: 848, 61.27
    • Ben Slater: 835, 57.15
    • Adam Lyth: 827, 45.31
    • Alex Lees: 741, 57.93
    • Tom Haines: 711, 60.40

Slater and Haines are the only two without Test caps, although the latter has been playing for England Lions lately.

Haines was partnered by Durham's 20-year-old opener Ben McKinney in those matches and he's highly regarded in the England set-up, but has 350 runs at an average of 31.81 this season.

England historically don't like making too many changes to a team but enough is enough now. Get Crawley out, get Pope out and get Carse out! Bring in Slater, Lawrence and Atkinson. But we need to change this! Our batting is not good enough, we always expose Root too early and the bowling isn't effective enough either.

    Aaron, Essex

It's all very well to say that Crawley should be dropped but who would replace him? I can understand Bethell replacing Pope but there is no other opener who is scoring runs in county cricket who can step in.

    Ian in East Lothian

These are the five highest totals made by a side batting first at Lord's who then went on to lose the Test:

    1. England 425 in 1930 v Australia
    2. New Zealand 386 in 2004 v England
    3. New Zealand 339 in 1978 v England
    4. England 294 in 1986 v India
    5. England 290 in 1985 v Australia

England closed their first innings on 387.
