Siraj staring down the batters is fine, but to do it with the umpire when he's given a decision against him, and rightly so, is not on. At what point do the referees actually start to do something mid-innings rather than measly fines after.

    Steve

Note to Siraj, maybe celebrating in the batters face isn't the best way to get on the good side of an umpire. Shame.

  2. Eng 149-4published at 40 overs

Ben Stokes and Ravindra Jadeja exchange a friendly word after the England skipper sweeps out of the rough for a single.

India are six overs behind on their over-rate, if you're wondering.

I don't want to bang on about that issue any more after writing this piece on Test cricket's slow-play problem and what can be done.

  3. Eng 148-4published at 39.3 overs

It's a change of ends for Ravindra Jadeja who is now on at the Pavilion End.

As the ball has got older there has been less of that vicious uneven bounce for the quicks.

  4. Eng 147-4published at 39 overs

    Root 37, Stokes 19

If Joe Root gets to 71 today he will be up to third in the all-time run-scorers list. He will go above both Rahul Dravid and the great Jacques Kallis.

Washington Sundar is on from the Nursery End, replacing Ravindra Jadeja after just one over.

Sundar dismissed Stokes at Edgbaston remember.

  6. Eng 145-4published at 38 overs

    Lead by 145

It doesn't take much to get Siraj's beans going but his next delivery is at 88mph - one of his quickest today.

When the DRS was shown on the big screen the India quick roared in dismay and threw his arms around.

To be fair to Mohammed Siraj, he has got an engine, hasn't he? He has run in so hard and hit the deck and bowled pretty well.

That, my friends, could be massive.

    Umpire's call!

There's a mix of cheers, Roooots and boos.

It looked out on all of the replays but Joe Root survives.

  10. Postpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 13 July

Ooooos around Lord's as the first replay is shown. Root is struggling.

  11. India reviewpublished at 37.2 overs

Now India are reviewing against Joe Root.

    It's an lbw shout.

    This is close, you know...

Mohammed Siraj is going to continue after drinks in what has already been a lengthy spell.

Good hour for England, not losing the wicket after lunch with their two most experienced players. However, it could have been different if Root had been dismissed in the first ball after lunch. Both sides have managed to stop the momentum so it will be interesting to see how it swings now.

  14. drinks break

    Drinks - Eng 140-4published at 37 overs

    Root 36, Stokes 15

Shubman Gill is holding onto these reviews like a Yorkshireman holds onto the cash in his wallet. Again India go up, again the umpire says no and again Gill decides against a referral.

That means Joe Root and Ben Stokes have seen off the first hour of the afternoon session. It has been hard work but they have made it to drinks.

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

This innings is in the top-10 most byes conceded in a Test in England. Five of them have been at Lord's. The record is 37 which was 91 years ago.

  16. Eng 136-4published at 36.1 overs

Only three bowlers - Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon and Ravichandran Ashwin - have dismissed Ben Stokes more times in Tests.

Wisely the England captain gets himself to the non-striker's end.

  17. Postpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 13 July

It's Jadeja time. Ben Stokes is on strike with a fair bit of scruffy rough in front of him.

Slip and a short leg in place.

  18. Eng 135-4published at 36 overs

The ball is nibbling around, beating Joe Root on the inside edge and then hitting him on the body. Even when Root does get runs at the end of the over it's through a miscue into the leg side.

Root is surviving, though. This partnership is now worth 46.

All those complaining about Jurel being allowed to keep, 25 byes so far. Second highest scorer.

40%! Remarkable. He's special, that lad.

Dhruv Jurel, meanwhile, has just let through four more byes. He's been really good in between, I promise.
