Fantastic passage of play there and a little bit of punch back from England. They have been under the cosh and these two are sort of righting the ship now. If they can get the ball a little softer and older, it'll go a long way in getting things back on track.

    Four-four-six!

You're never going to put Harry Brook in a box - he tucks into the second half of Akash Deep's over.

He twice drops to ramp boundaries through fine leg then greets the fuller response by smashing it over the long-off ropes.

At what point do India look at Dhruv Jurel? Because he has been magnificent. There is no way Rishabh Pant can keep this well and up to the stumps against the seamers.

  4. Eng 62-3published at 19 overs

    Oooh, did that hit anything?

Nitish Kumar Reddy's last delivery is full and low, it scoots past Joe Root's bat and away - a bye is eventually called.

The one run from the over.

All I wanted for my birthday today (turning 31) was a big England batting performance today, but it’s looking shaky now. I don’t think Crawley and Pope are good enough for this level.

Joe Root is the key, he is so calm and India will know that they will have to find something special to get him out.

  7. Eng 61-3published at 18 overs

The words of a wicketkeeper who I have seen stand up to pretty much every bowler, there - albeit there's not masses of pace at the BBC Sport game.

Now Joe Root gets his opening boundary, stepping well to Nitish Kumar Reddy and guiding him through point.

More keepers standing up to the pacers, please. They should make it mandatory in the playing conditions. At least 10 overs per session. One of the hardest skills in the game.

It's going to be an interesting play when Shubman Gill turns to Ravindra Jadeja. The pitch is becoming suited for the spinners.

  10. Eng 56-3published at 17 overs

There's Harry Brook's first boundary, lashing Nitish Kumar Reddy through the covers to the ropes.

  11. Eng 51-3published at 16 overs

That's the end of Mohammed Siraj for now, as Akash Deep comes on to replace him at the Pavilion End.

Harry Brook comes down the pitch to Deep's penultimate delivery but misses with his expansive shot.

That's a maiden to get Deep going.

Stats don’t tell you everything, but cricket is a numbers game and they do tell you conclusively that Zak Crawley is not a Test opener and Ollie Pope is not good enough at number three.

    Ryan, Yorkshire

Crawley and Pope are a liability to England. An occasional good innings doesn’t detract from the regular failures. No doubt they will be backed even more now.

Natural ability and the ability to convert skill into scores on a regular basis are not the same thing. Crawley and Pope have one, but not the other.

The problem there is that you can see it coming with Zak Crawley. You are afraid of him as an opposition but you can see it coming.

Just throwing this out there. Is Dhurv Jurel a better gloveman than Ben Foakes?

There have been some outrageously good takes on a tricky pitch.

  15. Eng 51-1published at 15 overs

Harry Brook at number five for England, looking to improve on his score of 11 in the first innings.

Nitish Kumar Reddy immediately sends the ball past Brook's bat, with the ball taken well by Dhruv Jurel standing up behind the stumps.

Crawley has to go. Beyond a joke now how he keeps getting away with abject returns.

The problem is Zak Crawley tying to play a shot off every ball. He's seen off Bumrah and Siraj, and he's decided that he's going to play every ball from Nitish Kumar Reddy. After showing the courage by seeing off Bumrah and Siraj, you'd expect more from Crawley.

  19. wicket

    Crawley c Jaiswal b Reddy 22 (Eng 50-3)

    And now Zak Crawley falls!

The England opener attempts a loose drive to a wide-ish delivery from Nitish Kumar Reddy and sends the ball skewing out to Yashasvi Jaiswal at gully, who takes the ball jumping to his right.

England in a lot of trouble now.
