Ruth Brooksbank: Re Victoria (12:11). Stokes can't declare until the 'Burnley Lara' has had the chance to pile on the runs in his last ever Test.

That’s pretty generous from the spinner [Motie], it all came out wrong that to get Smith off the mark. It was a horrible ball. I think Smith was a bit surprised to see it.

  4. Eng 266-5published at 59 overs

Motie offers up an absolute gimme ball to allow Smith to get off the mark in Test cricket, dropping his delivery horrendously short.

The 23-year-old doesn't need asking twice, and slaps the ball away for four through mid-wicket.

  5. Eng 262-5published at 58 overs

England batters taking an over each, as Root again faces all of Holder's over.

He takes two down to long leg, a miss-field allowing the second run.

Pete: Typical England performance from recent times. When they have their foot on the opponents throat they find a way to take it off and let them back in. No killer instinct.

  7. Eng 260-5published at 57 overs

A watchful start for Smith, seeing off six Motie deliveries for a maiden.

  8. Eng 260-5published at 56 overs

Jamie Smith has to wait for his first ball in Test cricket as Root farms the strike off Jason Holder.

The England veteran takes two square and then flicks one off his pad to the fine leg boundary.

That's a first boundary in almost eight overs.

It spins but it's not a great shot from Ben Stokes. Just didn’t look quite balanced, I've been watching him a bit for Durham and there's something just not quite right with his batting and rhythm of play at the minute.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 55 overs

    Stokes b Motie 4 (Eng 254-5)

    Absolute ripper!

Motie's ball absolutely jags back out of the footholes to up-end Ben Stokes' middle stump, I'm not sure there's a whole lot the England captain could have done about that.

A breakthrough in Motie's first over, and debutant Jamie Smith comes to the crease.

  11. Fifty for Joe Rootpublished at 54.4 overs

    Eng 254-4

Changes at both ends as the West Indies bring on Gudakesh Motie.

Joe Root flicks him to deep square leg to bring up his fifty.

Victoria: Anyone else surprised Stokes hasn't declared yet?

  13. Eng 250-4published at 54 overs

Resuming after the drinks break, Jason Holder takes the ball for the first time today.

He sends down a maiden to Joe Root.

The first hour has been high class from England. They are showing it's a good pitch and showing how West Indies' batting line-up struggled yesterday but we know they are very inexperienced.

Joe Root is playing beautifully. When you get these conditions as a batter, you have got to get runs in the bank because trickier times will come.

It's not international cricket if there are different standards for different teams. I will leave it at that.

I have been out of international cricket for a while but I am looking forward to keeping these conversations going around the future of the West Indies. There are reasons, there are explanations of finances, of lack of red-ball cricket being played.

All we want is a successful West Indies team and to grow the game in the country again.

  17. Eng 250-4published at 53 overs

England find themselves somewhat becalmed, the five overs since Harry Brook's big six going for just 13 runs with no boundaries.

Root turns Alzarri Joseph to square leg to bring up England's 250 and take his side's lead to 129.

    The players will take drinks.

Stokes gets off the mark from Shamar Joseph's final ball, running two after a meaty strike to mid-on.

Sam: I went to day one in shorts and a T-shirt, only because my older brother nicked my jacket for the day. I had to deal with high winds and a splash of rain and still got sunburnt. Today is 100% shorts and shirt day.
