That's come against the run of play. Harry Brook played beautifully but he was looking to take on the game, take on the short ball.

We've been saying all morning that it was a good option to him. That is just one area of Brook's game that he needs to learn from, where you're dominating the game and you've got the bowling in the palm of your hand, you have got to kick on and make the most of it.

He is immensely talented, we know that, it's just one thing that will come from experience and maturity.

    Brook won't progress past fifty!

He gets into a strange shape trying to hook Alzarri Joseph and can only send a huge skier spiralling over his head - keeper Joshua Da Silva barely has to move to take the catch.

The England batter started walking off as soon as he hit it. He looked well set for a big score, but his wait for a home century will have to go on a little longer.

A quieter over from Shamar Joseph, just a single for Root from it, pushing to point.

This is Harry Brook's 12th fifty in 13 Tests, to go along with four centuries. He is yet to score a century on home soil.

Brook been sensational. He is so valuable to England because he scores plenty of runs but he scores them quickly. He's got all the shots in the book and his judgement is impeccable, he knows just the right moment to play them.

  8. Fifty for Harry Brookpublished at 49 overs

    Eng 240-3

Brook opens the face of the bat and guides Alzarri Joseph towards the backward point boundary.

The chasing fielder cuts off the four, but Brook runs two to bring up his fifty off 55 balls.

A couple of dot balls close the over.

Steven Finn and I have got very different fashion senses. Last night to watch the football, he wore some very baggy trousers and a top with flowers and apples on it.

    Is he 19 or 36?

West Indies have got to choose one plan and stick to it. There is too much inconsistency.

England are scoring from drives, flicks, pulls, all around the ground.

Here's Shamar Joseph again, switching ends to bowl with the pavilion at his back.

He starts with five dot balls before sending down a bouncer that Harry Brook happily pulls away for a mighty six.

West Indies have got to change their mentality. The first half an hour hasn't worked for them. It is worth trying the short stuff, even just for a few overs.

Joe Root was the quieter half of this partnership initially, but he's levelling up his rate now.

For the second over in a row, he picks up two boundaries, pulling Alzarri Joseph away square and then flicking the following ball to the leg side boundary.

He's now on 39, and England's lead is past a hundred.

Joe Root makes it look so easy. He just caresses it.

Not to put the commentator's curse on him here, but day two at Lord's, sun's out, good wicket, old ball. These are the days you cash in.

  18. Eng 218-3published at 46 overs

Joe Root shows signs of getting into his groove, turning Seales away for four through square leg before unfurling a lovely cover drive to add another boundary.

Meanwhile, one thing that's not acceptable in the Lord's pavilion, even today, are a pair of jeans.

It's that item of clothing that's the subject of impassioned debate on the cricket desk this morning. Certain people here seem to regard jeans are a terrible pair of shackles, that must be shed immediately upon entering the house, favouring track suits and, sigh, "jammies".

Other considerably more logical members of the organisation aren't that bothered.

I invite you to contribute your positions on the matter.

If you're going to bowl short, you've got to bowl bouncers. It's not going to threaten at all otherwise, on this pitch.

  20. Eng 210-3published at 45 overs

Alzarri Joseph replaces his namesake Shamar after two overs and Brook strikes him for four through backward point to move into the forties.

To keep with the day's Red for Ruth theme, every bit of detailing on England's kit is red, while the West Indies have changed the colour of their shirt numbers.

There's a decent smattering of pink and scarlet in the crowds, with Lord's welcoming some rather more elaborate fashionable stylings than one might typically encounter at the historic ground.
