Bad news. Shamar Joseph has gone off.

Kraigg Brathwaite finishes the over, but that's not good for the West Indies. Their bowlers are struggling as it is.

But what about in the winter, Tom?

Meanwhile, Shamar Joseph goes down again with a bit of discomfort.

Jon Hollis: Do we all agree that Jimmy Anderson should come in next to give the Burnley Lara the best chance of a century in his final Test innings?

    Chance!

Chris Woakes edges Alzarri Joseph just past Jason Holder at slip. It was very low and if a man of his height can't get a hand to it, not many will.

Four frustrating runs conceded by the West Indies after a couple of tight overs.

There's been some passionate debate in the office around what's acceptable to wear when you're lounging around the house. Some of you may have tuned in for Mike's jeans chat earlier.

I'm astonished that he will chill around the house, on the sofa, watching telly while wearing jeans. I just can't understand how that's comfortable, in any world. It's got to be tracksuit bottoms or PJ's. We need our faithful BBC live text readers to help us settle the debate...

  8. How's stat?!published at 13:58 British Summer Time 11 July

For all the talk of Bazball, England have scored their runs at less than four an over today. A sign of a more measured approach?

More interestingly, perhaps, is the metric that England's expected total (think xG) is 209-7.

  9. Eng 310-6published at 72 overs

Jamie Smith is kicking on - or trying to, anyway.

He slogs one down the ground that plugs just in front of the boundary for a couple, before a firm pull shot finds the fielder at square leg.

Former West Indies all-rounder on BBC Sounds

I was impressed with the balance. Most, if not all, the shots Smith plays are with immaculate balance. You always like a player being able to play a shot and hold a pose.

By all accounts he’s a bit small in frame but so professional, put work in the gym and is really focused. You seem him now, Test Match debut at Lord’s, you just have to feel happy for him.

Four more to Jamie Smith, whipped through mid-wicket. He's looked very composed so far.

Turning in to a good Test for Surrey debutants.

  12. Eng 300-6published at 70 overs

    Ah, sloppy from Alzarri Joseph.

Chris Woakes easily tucks one off his hips for four as the paceman drifts down the leg side, before an easy single brings up England's 300 and a lead of 179.

Gudakesh Motie races through his first over after lunch, just a single to Chris Woakes from it.

He's got figures of 2-26 so far.

The sun is shining at Lord's now, and after yesterday's murky weather, it's a glorious afternoon for cricket.

    Right, let's get back going.

West Indies' players are still full of smiles as they come back out, no doubt fuelled by a lovely Lord's lunch.

I doubt it happens at this level, but I think if I could change one rule about cricket it would be the thing where the away team eats first at lunch/tea. The team that's just batted should always eat first, so that their bowlers can tuck into lunch and have more time for it to go down before going out to bowl.

And yes, in case you couldn't work it out, I'm a bowler.

Speaking of greats, Joe Root moved to 11,804 Test match runs during his knock of 68.

That took him to 10th in the all-time list, and is 10 runs away from overtaking Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene in ninth.

Sir Alastair Cook is the only England player ahead of him, in fifth place with 12,472.

Jimmy Anderson's dad, Michael, has been on Test Match Special during the break.

"It had to end eventually, didn't it?" he said.

"He's 42 this month and it is ridiculous for a fast bowler to keep going until that age. But the thing is that he is still fit, he still really enjoys it.

"I do think it probably needed someone to tap him on the shoulder and say, you know, 'maybe you've done enough'."

Debutant Jamie Smith has also looked in decent touch, without any real fireworks as of yet. He has 16 from 43 balls as England reached 293-6 at lunch.

The lead is 172. I'm not sure we'll see any bold, Edgbaston-esque declarations from Stokes here but you just never know. I suspect the Lord's crowd would enjoy seeing Jimmy Anderson with bat in hand for perhaps the last time!

Root also cruised past 50, but Gudakesh Motie's spin gave West Indies something to celebrate amid a generally one-sided morning.

Ben Stokes' reaction to his dismissal says it all, while Root was also bamboozled by some turn.

Stokes fell for just four while Root made a fluent 68, the fourth England batter to reach 50 in the innings but none have been able to kick on to three figures (yet).

Under blue skies in London, Harry Brook and Joe Root resumed in sublime style, one of those partnerships where they just made batting look effortlessly easy.

The old ball wasn't doing much, and West Indies' bowlers were far too inconsistent to build any sustained pressure.

Brook reached his half-century from 55 balls before a lapse in concentration saw him miscue a short ball from Alzarri Joseph for the first wicket of the day.

    Thanks, Mike.

Strange session, really. England are still dominating and in a good position but with the ball starting to turn, Shoaib Bashir will be twitching.

We'll have a quick recap during the interval before England look to stretch their lead in the afternoon session.
