Darren Matthews: If Atkinson takes 5-56 or less, or if he takes six wickets, then he will have the best debut bowling figures for England - beating the record held by Fred Martin from 1890.

  2. WI 42-4published at 21 overs

Three scoring shots in the over!

The West Indies batters take three singles off Atkinson and I will very much take that.

Rob Peacock: Odd shot for Hodge to play when the ball has been keeping low back of a length. Probably don’t want to be playing cross-bat shots there.

  4. WI 39-4published at 20 overs

Holder doubles his total, knocking a Stokes delivery towards mid-on for a single.

Listening to this West Indies second innings is depressingly sad and worrying for the future of Test cricket.

  6. WI 38-4published at 19 overs

Holder picks up a single with an inside edge that runs to backward square.

I don't want to dwell on the Anderson-Warne discourse, but for the record - with that wicket he can no longer overtake Warne, and would need all six remaining wickets to draw level with him.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18.3 overs

    Hodge b Atkinson 4 (WI 37-4)

    Chopped on!

The West Indies woes continue as Kavem Hodge edges the ball onto his stumps while trying to cut a lifter outside off.

Jason Holder walks in to try and save the day, let alone the Test.

  8. WI 36-3published at 18 overs

Four for Kavem Hodge from his second ball, pulling Stokes away to the square boundary.

After scoring 18 runs from 16 overs, the West Indies have added 18 more in ten balls.

This is one of the only times Lewis followed the path of the ball when he was beaten. Gets a good stride in but just gets away from his body.

This is Test cricket, that one mistake cost him. Ben Stokes does what Ben Stokes does.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 17.2 overs

    Louis c Smith b Stokes 14 (WI 32-3)

Stokes strikes straight after the drinks break!

He finds the edge of Mikyle Louis as he tries to defend playing forward, feathering the ball behind to Jamie Smith.

Here comes Kavem Hodge, with the West Indies in deep trouble.

  11. WI 32-2published at 17.1 overs

After opening his innings with three maidens, Stokes concedes a two as Louis turns the ball into mid-wicket.

The umpires don't like the shape of the ball so are going to replace it. While they do that the players are going to take drinks.

Just turned off the computer for the day (wfh) to watch the cricket. Great to see Ben Stokes back, healthy and bowling well. Last time I went to Lord's it rained all day and play was abandoned. Did get to meet Mary Berry though. Lovely lady.

The dam breaks, a flood of runs!

After failing to score from his first 14 balls, Alick Athanaze strikes three of Gus Atkinson's first four balls to the boundary.

Consecutive shots through backward point and then a swivel pull through mid-wicket.

Who decided the Test should start on a Wednesday? Ridiculous! Birthday celebration at Lord's on Saturday all but cancelled. Any chance Brian Charles Lara could pad up? Better not have any rain at Edgbaston otherwise the summer really will be ruined.

  15. WI 18-2published at 16 overs

    And another!

One single from the last 30 balls, 23 balls without scoring.

  16. WI 18-2published at 15 overs

Add another maiden to the tally, as Atkinson picks up his first of the day.

Alick Athanaze is yet score off 14 deliveries.

It's great to see Ben Stokes and charging in without having to hold your breath every time his delivery stride lands.

  18. WI 18-2published at 14 overs

Maiden for Ben Stokes, the eighth of the innings.

The West Indies have played scoring shots from just six of the 84 balls so far.

Just boarded a train in Cornwall heading for day three at Lord's. Potentially might just be a quiet pint in the Tavern then home...

Mikyle Louis pushes Atkinson's opening ball into the covers for a single, but Athanaze can't get any of the five subsequent deliveries away.

Just a reminder of how inexperienced this West Indies batting line-up is - here's the number of Test appearances for numbers 2-5 going into this series:

    • Mikyle Louis: 0
    • Kirk McKenzie: 3
    • Alick Athanaze: 4
    • Kavem Hodge: 2
