West Indies' openers started solidly yesterday before the Gus Atkinson show.

It was a chaotic slip from 88-3 to 121 all out that they'll be desperate to put behind them.

So, West Indies' openers will have a tricky period to navigate here before tea. It's still bright, and the new ball did swing for their bowlers but it also came on to the bat nicely and flew to the boundary when timed well.

England were all out for 371, with five batters passing 50 including Jamie Smith on Test debut, the last man to fall for 70.

The first innings lead is 250.

It's all over in a hurry. Jimmy Anderson remains unbeaten in his (maybe) final Test innings, having not faced a ball.

Jamie Smith had a licence to kick on with the tail, and having smashed the previous ball for four, goes for another. But he picks out Kirk McKenzie at deep mid-wicket, who takes a great diving catch having covered a lot of ground to get there.

Lovely start to Test cricket from the debutant though, batting with composure to begin his innings before accelerating once the lower order joined him.

That was absolutely spine tingling hearing that reception for Jimmy Anderson.

And possibly for the last time, here is Jimmy Anderson with the bat for England.

He receives another standing ovation, and handshakes all round from the West Indies players.

Bashir run out (Louis) 0 (Eng 366-9)

    A stunner!

Jamie Smith skies one high into the air and it sails safely into a gap on the off-side. But Mikyle Louis swoops in, picks up the ball and in one movement of epic athleticism throws the stumps down with Bashir well short of his ground at the non-striker's end, having turned back for the second.

Cracking piece of work with joyful celebrations to match.

I mean, it's no wonder he wants to keep the strike when he can play shots like that.

Jamie Smith absolutely launches Seales into the stands for six. Huge.

That takes England's lead to 245, and the umpires need to find a new ball.

    Poor Shoaib Bashir.

Even when he hits the ball into the gap, after 17 balls, Jamie Smith turns down the single. Obviously it's fair enough, but you'd just want at least one run, wouldn't you?

Shoaib Bashir is rehearsing his shots after every ball like an opener, but the only problem is that he's barely managed to hit one yet.

You've got to admire the confidence. He is yet to score from 14 balls and is becoming an increasing source of frustration for Jayden Seales, who is probing away nicely and beating the edge regularly.

Oh, absolutely on Dawn's daughter's side here. Back in the school days, it was definitely straight out of school uniform and into trackies as soon as you get home.

Meanwhile, Shamar Joseph has left the field again after that over. Something clearly isn't right.

On the subject of clothing to wear when at home...my daughter wears shorts and t-shirt all year round but does add an oversized hoodie in the winter. She is 15 so is generally getting changed out of her school uniform. We have to allow for longer than 5 minutes if we want to go out anywhere (compared with Hannah's Dad comment 14.46)

Good news for the West Indies. Shamar Joseph is back on the field and fit to bowl.

Bad news for the West Indies, Jamie Smith sends the ball sailing into the stands for six.

Jamie Smith's name has been floating around for years in terms of being a future England star, and he's shown why today.

    Good question.

Pros: Elasticated waistband, flexible in material, loose-fitting.

Cons: I'd definitely spill food down them.

It's probably a no from me.

The new ball is doing all sorts, all of a sudden. Jamie Smith is cut in half by a beautiful swinging delivery from Holder. There might've been an edge but Josh Da Silva can't get to it, diving down the leg side.

Smith's half-century comes from 98 balls, seven fours. He's the 10th England wicketkeeper to reach 50 on Test debut. The last one to do that was Ben Foakes, who made 107 in Galle in November 2018.

    England's debutants continue to shine.

Jamie Smith has gone up a gear since Woakes' dismissal, reaching a half-century on Test debut that is gratefully applauded by his team-mates on the balcony.

    He's looked right at home.

A slight change in gear from Smith. That looks to be his area, the way he sets up and his grip on his bat. That shot is in his arc.

Jamie Smith isn't hanging around now.

A heave down the ground brings a one-bounce four, then tries to repeat the shot and is lucky not to edge it to the keeper.

    He's on to 49.
