  1. Eng 168-9published at 34 overs

    Archer 2, Rashid 2

England are using this series to help some of their fast bowlers, including Jofra Archer, build back into rhythm and fitness before the Ashes. It doesn't look like they're going to score enough runs for Archer to get a second spell.

That will be an overlooked consequence of this batting performance.

    Overton c Santner b Tickner 42 (Eng 165-9)

    That will be that.

Jamie Overton decides he has to try and add more quick runs but only manages to sky a catch to mid-off. This is a sorry performance from England.

  3. Eng 165-8published at 33 overs

    Overton 42, Archer 1

Mitchell Santner completes a maiden quicker than you can say 'another England batting collapse'.

  4. Eng 165-8published at 32 overs

I wondered if England would send out Adil Rashid to knock singles for five or six overs in support of Jamie Overton but Jofra Archer is in.

  5. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 31.5 overs

    Carse c Mitchell b Tickner 3 (Eng 164-8)

    This is not pretty.

Yes, it's the England way. Yes, it's a white-ball game and you need to score runs. But Brydon Carse has swung a short ball straight into the hands of deep square leg to add to England's woe.

Jamie Overton has been equally impressive against both pace and spin this series. He is striking at 104 v pace and 114 vs spin.

  7. Eng 162-7published at 31 overs

This feels a better pitch than the first ODI in Mount Maunganui. You could excuse the top order getting out in that one but the ball has done far less today.

  8. Eng 160-7published at 30.2 overs

Overton is going to keep on swinging and why not? It's working. This is a textbook four through the covers.

    New Zealand lose their review.

This should be outside the line of off stump. The Jamie Overton super fans reading this can lie comfortably in their beds.

Is this the end of the Overton assault?

The umpire turns down an lbw shout but Mitchell Santner likes it.

Blair Tickner's figures were economical before that over. If you had a few drinks, or little sleep, you could mistake him for Harry Brook's dad now he's shaved his head.

  13. 6 runs

    Eng 153-7published at 29.3 overs

What did they feed Jamie Overton in business class en route to New Zealand?

He cracks a pull with a flourish and then launches a six over long-on.

  14. Eng 143-7published at 29 overs

Brydon Carse is in the middle and there are still 21 overs to go. Not ideal.

An absolute jaffa from Michael Bracewell. He's done Sam Curran all ends up. That was wide of the crease, drifted in and then straightened up to beat the outside edge and hit the top of off stump.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 28.4 overs

    Curran b Bracewell 17 (Eng 143-7)

It gets worse. Quicker, flatter, fuller from Michael Bracewell. Sam Curran is emphatically bowled by the off-spinner.

  17. Eng 141-6published at 28 overs

    Curran 16, Overton 23

This is a good over for England with the batters perhaps benefiting from what I was just saying. Jamie Overton lurches right the way forward with his towering frame to smear a full ball from Mitchell Santner straight. A few balls later Curran rocks back to pull. He also finds the boundary.

  18. Eng 131-6published at 27 overs

Instinctively I'd think Curran and Overton should bat well together. They're Surrey teammates. One is right-handed, the other left. One is massive, the other short. There's a bit of Crawley and Duckett about them.

  19. 6 runs

    Eng 126-6published at 26 overs

    Curran 9, Overton 15

Crunched for six by Jamie Overton!

Where there's an Overton there's hope. Said someone. One day. Maybe.
