Well, our old foe the rain has once again done its best to disrupt our cricketing pleasure, but we've had decent chunks of play in all but one of our five matches.

The bowlers have probably enjoyed it more than the batters, but all of our games that did make it onto the field are set up nicely at stumps.

The weekend is set fair which means plenty of action and we'll be across it all.

So please join us again tomorrow and let's see what day two will bring.

    Thanks for your company today.

Old Trafford: Lancashire v Kent 203-7

    Taunton: Somerset 128 v Essex 156 & 6-0

    Division Two:

    Derby: Derbyshire 189-8 v Sussex

Lord's: Middlesex v Leicestershire - no play on day one

    Headingley: Yorkshire v Glamorgan 109-4

  3. Close of play at Tauntonpublished at 18:59 3 May

    Somerset 128 v Essex 156 & 6-0

I wonder who the last Essex player was to open the batting and the bowling on the same day?

Sam Cook is beaten outside off by Josh Davey from the River End, who gets a bit of movement off the seam.

Five slips in. Five! Cook is forward with soft hands to block.

A Davey no ball is cut square off the back foot for four.

The last ball is squeezed between bat and thigh pad but Cook survives to stumps. Ouch.

But Somerset will be feeling more pain after missing out on an innings lead. They crashed from 95-5 to 128 with all ten wickets shared evenly by Jamie Porter and Sam Cook. They bowled 31.4 overs between them in an extended session of play.

Tom Lammonby top-scored with a patient 38 but could not quite steer the tail past the Essex first innings score.

  4. 'A wicket would life Somerset spirits'published at 18:58 3 May

    Somerset 128 v Essex 156 & 6-0

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

It would lift Somerset's spirits no end if they could pick up a wicket here.

They must be feeling a little bit down.

It's been a day of ups and downs.

They were on top of the world when they bowled Essex out for 156 and then down in the dumps having been bowled out themselves for 128.

  5. Essex begin their second inningspublished at 18:52 3 May

    Somerset 128 v Essex 156 & 0-0

This match has rattled along at breakneck speed, quite untarnished by the debilitating bad weather elsewhere in the country.

This could be a two-day game.

Dean Elgar and Sam Cook, that well known opener, will get the innings started.

Josh Davey will bowl to Cook. Sam Cook.

  6. 'A dismal ending to the day for Somerset'published at 18:52 3 May

    Somerset 128 all out v Essex 156

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

Somerset have this tendency to collapse and they've gone from 95-5 to 128 all out.

A pretty dismal ending to the day for Somerset and the long-suffering Somerset supporters.

  7. SOMERSET ALL OUT FOR 128published at 18:44 3 May

    Ball c Duke b Cook 0

Essex pick up a lead of 28 as Somerset crash from 95-5.

Simon Cook finishes with 5-38 as he induces a loose waft from Jake Ball without footwork and a thin edge ensues through to keeper Harry Duke.

One over for Essex to bat tonight as 20 wickets fall in the day's play.

Porter took 5-37. Brilliant bowling from the new ball pair.

  8. WICKET Pretorius c Elgar b Cook 1published at 18:41 3 May

    Somerset 128-9 v Essex 156

Davey gets a single first ball and Pretorius is off the mark as well with a drive just wide of Nick Browne at mid off. Over.

    Four overs left tonight.

    Another wicket!

Simon Cook has Migael Pretorius caught by Elgar at first slip.

A loose drive anchored to the crease and Elgar makes a sharp chance look easy.

Jake Ball is in at 11 and we still have 22 balls left tonight.

  9. WICKET Lammonby c Elgar b Porter 38published at 18:37 3 May

    Somerset 126-8 v Essex 156

Jamie Porter bowls round the wicket to Tom Lammonby who drives but without clearing extra cover.

Edged and caught at first slip by Dean Elgar! Porter has five wickets!

A long and vital vigil lasting 116 balls and almost three hours comes to an end, and now Somerset are in serious danger of an innings deficit as their top-scorer departs.

Length ball, moving in and inviting the drive.

    Josh Davey will bat next.

  10. Postpublished at 18:35 3 May

    Somerset 126-7 v Essex 156

Handy knock from Craig Overton there - 16 in a partnership of 26 isn't bad in the context of this low-scoring game.

Migael Pretorius sees out the Porter over.

Tom Lammonby then leaves Sam Cook outside off stump and gets a single off the third ball, steered to fine leg.

Four byes as the ball beats the bat and the keeper. That jagged in very sharply off the seam.

A play and miss follows but Pretorius survives. Somerset trail by 30.

  11. 'Lammonby is playing a valuable innings'published at 18:34 3 May

    Somerset 121-7 v Essex 156

    Nick Gledhill
    BBC Essex

Tom Lammonby is really sticking in there and playing a valuable innings for his side.

  12. WICKET Overton c Critchley b Porter 16published at 18:28 3 May

    Somerset 121-7 v Essex 156

Close call for Somerset as Craig Overton drives and misses Jamie Porter.

A big appeal for caught behind off an inside edge is turned down.

    Loose drive there!

Gone this time! Porter pitches it up, inviting the drive and Overton nicks it to Critchley in the slips. A sharp chance, taken just in front of the tummy.

Migael Pretorius comes in to bat. Porter has 4-35.

  13. Postpublished at 18:24 3 May

    Somerset 121-6 v Essex 156

Sam Cook and Jamie Porter have bowled 27 overs between them since tea and Tom Westley may have to make a change before stumps to manage their workload.

A brief inspection of the ball does not herald a change.

Craig Overton is beaten by Cook as he withdraws the bat late. He gets away with a leg bye next ball.

Cook is round the wicket to the left-handed Tom Lammonby who defends.

Shot! Lammonby takes the deficit below 40 with a drive between cover and mid off for four, beating Jamie Porter to the rope.

Two more runs flicked off the pads to deep square.

  14. 'Pitch is tougher keep Porter and Cook out of the game'published at 18:24 3 May

    Somerset 104-6 v Essex 156

    Nick Gledhill
    BBC Essex

The one thing about a pitch like this one is that it's tougher to keep Porter and Cook out of the game.

If you've got a pitch that is a truer surface for the batsmen then potentially it becomes a bit more tricky for Essex because they'd have to hope there's something in it for the spinners.

  15. Postpublished at 18:20 3 May

    Somerset 114-6 v Essex 156

Four more to Craig Overton, this time off Jamie Porter, via a drive through wide mid off.

A mighty swing through the on side off a short ball brings four more through mid wicket.

Overton keeps the strike with a single driven into the on side.

Good counter-attacking batting and putting a few more overs into the legs of the Essex strike bowlers.

  16. Overton attackspublished at 18:16 3 May

    Somerset 105-6 v Essex 156

Tom Lammonby moves to 30 with a single into the on side.

Craig Overton then gets a thick inside edge off a defensive push and runs a single to square leg.

Lammonby drives to a diving cover and is kept to one.

That's the Somerset 100 in the 36th over.

Shot! Wide from Cook and smashed through cover by Overton for four.

Overton keeps the strike with a single to mid on.

  17. 'Good captaincy from Tom Westley'published at 18:15 3 May

    Somerset 95-6 v Essex 156

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

It was good captaincy from Tom Westley bringing Jamie Porter back into the attack and Lewis Gregory is given out lbw.

This innings is just about level pegging with the Essex innings.

So, neither side with the decisive advantage, but if Essex can pick up these last four wickets this evening then I think they'll be ahead.

  18. Close of play at Headingleypublished at 18:13 3 May

    Yorkshire v Glamorgan 109-4

    That's your lot at Headingley.

Bad light ends day one, nine overs early as Glamorgan close on 109-4.

Colin Ingram (7*) and Chris Cooke (5*) will resume in the morning and hope for better light after finishing in the gloaming.

Only 41 overs were possible after a big rain delay in the middle of the day's play so we may well see some extra time added on tomorrow.

  19. Postpublished at 18:11 3 May

    Somerset 97-6 v Essex 156

With all due respect to the Somerset tail, the hopes of the host team are firmly pinned on Tom Lammonby.

But first Craig Overton has to see out this Cook over and he gets away with a single first ball.

One more run to Lammonby to long leg to move to 29.

Overton drives and misses. 10 overs left tonight.

  20. WICKET Gregory LBW b Porter 9published at 18:06 3 May

    Somerset 95-6 v Essex 156

Double trouble for Somerset as Jamie Porter comes back on at the other end.

Gone! Lewis Gregory is pinned LBW to the first ball of the spell.

Hooping in and striking the pad low in front of middle and leg.

Craig Overton is coming in to bat.
