    Andy Zaltzman
    Statistician on Test Match Special

This is the 12th international T20 here so there aren't too many stats to go on for run chases. But on the seven occasions a team has made over 160 they have won, and when they have made under 160 they have lost.

In all domestic cricket on this ground there have been 25 times when the team batting first has made 180 more and on 24 occasions they have won the match.

I understand none of the Test squad could play in this series but I simply don't get the lack of batsmen in the line-up. Is there really no-one else out there who could balance the side better?

    Target 180

After demonstrating his power Liam Livingstone then demonstrates his technique as he plays a gorgeous cover drive for four.

That is the big over England needed, 17 off it.

  4. 6 runs

    Eng 78-4published at 10.2 overs

Hold the phone...Liam Livingstone is keeping England's slim hopes alive.

After giving himself a few deliveries to take stock he thunders Marcus Stoinis away for four before launching the next delivery over mid-wicket for six.

At the halfway stage of the chase, WinViz still isn't giving England much hope of winning this one...

Phil Salt looked the most comfortable England batter but he perfectly picked out Matt Short on the boundary to depart for 20.

  7. Eng 68-4published at 10 overs

    Target 180

Like his fellow leg-spinner Adil Rashid, Adam Zampa is bringing an element of control in these middle overs.

England limp to the halfway stage on 68-4, with the hushed crowd around the Utilita Bowl saying it all.

Jacob Bethell didn't really get going. He's a talent but will be frustrated with two off six. It's a different prospect facing Adam Zampa on these types of surfaces.

My optimism quickly diminished as a typical England battling collapse ensues. How many times have we seen the bowlers look like they’ve rescued things and then the batters throw the game away? Very frustrating.

Here is that brilliant catch from Tim David to dismiss Jordan Cox. Well worth a watch.

  11. Eng 62-4published at 9 overs

We have just seen a shot of two hardy cricket fans in the crowd smiling away wrapped up tightly in winter coats. You wouldn't believe it is only early September.

Marcus Trescothick has also dug the big coat out and looks rather nonplussed at what he is seeing,

There's a concussion check for Liam Livingstone has he mistimes a pull right into his helmet. Livingstone shows no ill-effects as he pulls the next ball for four, the first boundary for 23 deliveries.

  12. Eng 53-4published at 8 overs

Sam Curran joins Liam Livingstone with England well and truly under the pump.

    Bethell b Zampa 2 (Eng 52-4)

Jacob Bethell rocks onto the back foot and tries to heave Adam Zampa over mid-wicket, but it skids on and seems a bit quicker than Bethell expected too, with the ball going on to cannon into his leg stump.

England in all sorts of trouble now.

Time for some spin as leggy Adam Zampa comes into the attack.

England did well to see off Xavier Bartlett's opening overs. He's a Powerplay specialist, and was the leading wicket taker in the BBL this season - and for champions Brisbane Heat as well.

After losing those three early wickets it is little surprise that WinViz is heavily backing Australia to see out this match.

There was a loud screech from a woman below the commentary box after Jacob Bethell got off the mark. I can only assume that was his mum. I know the Bethell family have flown over from Barbados to watch him make his England debut.

  18. Eng 49-3published at 7 overs

Relief for Jacob Bethell as he pushes his third ball to the covers and runs a single.

But immediately afterwards Xavier Bartlett pulls up. It is not that obvious what the problem is. One of the physios jogs out, but Bartlett has made his mind up and starts walking off.

Cameron Green will bowls the final two balls of the over at a cost of one run.

Jacob Bethell strolls out to the middle. This is not the ideal scenario for a debutant.

That is one of the places you can bowl to Phil Salt. He will always take on the fielders on the boundary, and it doesn't matter where you put those fielders. He's missed that by a metre or so and he probably understands the significance of losing his wicket in the context of this game with England's middle order.
