Sri Lanka hurriedly bring Vishwa Fernando back to replace Milan Rathnayake.

No matter, Smith starts with a couple of twos then lofts the ball over mid-off for a one-bounce four.

He follows that with another boundary, pulling to the leg-side ropes.

    Hello, Jamie Smith!

Milan Rathnayake changes end to replace Vishwa Fernando and Smith suddenly decides to up the ante.

His mis-times the first delivery, picking up two after his chip beats the mid-off fielder.

The next two are much better, a crashing drive through cover point for four and a lovely pick-up shot to launch a back of length ball over the square-leg ropes.

The cricket that we saw yesterday wasn't particularly good and that came from England feeling they'd already done enough to win it after the first day.

  12. Eng 84-7published at 26 overs

Six more for Olly Stone, as he faces out a maiden from the returning the Asitha Fernando.

Mostly short stuff, which seems curious when Sri Lanka have swung the ball so well.

This is why you don't throw your wickets away when you're up.

England felt they had enough runs and stopped trying. They then let Sri Lanka bring it back, making them favourites to win it.

Sri Lanka have been really probing away.

I feel they've bowled really well as a unit.

All this criticism of England is doing Sri Lanka a huge disservice. They’ve bowled exceptionally well in the last few hours. It wasn’t poor shots that got the last four wickets, it was extremely good swing bowling.

Stone faces all of Vishwa Fernando's over, before retaining the strike again with a sixth-ball knock into the covers.

One thing I'll say is throughout this series, Sri Lanka have dug in. They don't throw the game away, they just slowly chip away.

This might be one that pays off, they've got the courage to fight hard.

If England get a bloody nose here it may not be a bad thing. They've seemed contemptuous of the game and of Sri Lanka at times. They can't go into series against India and Australia with this mindset and expect to win while playing sloppy cricket.

Stone takes a final ball leg-bye to retain the strike.

This feels like England's last viable partnership - if Stone goes then it seems likely that Smith will have to start going hard.

Rathnayake has been able to adapt his bowling today, that ball that just got Gus Atkinson out was beautiful.

There is a little bit of doubt in this lower order now.
