  2. 'We haven't played a huge amount of one-day cricket'published at 20:23 British Summer Time 23 May 2024

England captain Heather Knight speaking to Sky Sports: "Scrappy is a good word for it. Areas we can do a lot better, too many extras and lacking execution, but at the end of the day we got the job done. The wicket was a bit slow, a lot of batters got starts. Tammy set the tempo well.

"We haven't played a huge amount of one-day cricket, finding the tempo can be hard. You've got to be patient, play the ebbs and flows of the game.

"Batters need to go on, we need one batter to dominate and take that score up to 300. A few things to tidy up, fewer extras and tighter in the field."

  3. 'It was quite cold out there'published at 20:21 British Summer Time 23 May 2024

Player of the match Sophie Ecclestone speaking to Sky Sports: "I think I got away with a few balls, it was quite cold out there, cold hands. It was great to get three wickets.

"I think I need to bowl my best ball for longer, sometimes I go hunting for wickets, but I can bowl my best ball and use my arm ball when needed.

"We didn't get enough runs, we should have got a few more runs. We kept our intensity high.

The next game in this series is on Sunday in Taunton.

We'll be here, as ever, for that one.

  5. 'We need to improve our partnerships'published at 20:19 British Summer Time 23 May 2024

Pakistan captain Nida Dar speaking to Sky Sports: "The bowlers bowled really well today. We expected 270 but to restrict England to 250 was very good.

"It was not over at half time but England made it very hard for us. We need to improve our partnerships. We were lacking in partnerships in the middle parts.

"We will talk again, plan again [ahead of Taunton on Sunday]. We need to just finish the games."

Away from that Sophie Ecclestone was, once again, the pick of the bowlers with three wickets.

In Pakistan's chase Aliya Riaz and captain Nida Dar had them in a pretty strong position. At one stage they needed 95 from 96 balls with six wickets left.

Their wickets marked the turnaround, however. Once Aliya and Dar fell, England were always comfortable.

There was a little bit of rustiness of bowling long spells. Sometimes that is a bit contagious. They were trying to push for wickets early doors and didn't get it quite right. It probably won't happen again. It's just been one of those days.

England had a red-ball practice session the other day and I've never known that happen. We never did that when I was playing. So there's obviously a focus on building scores and that Ashes series. They are trying to figure it out, and they need to figure it out quickly.

    Here's some of that batting.

England hit 22 fours in the innings, but only four in their last fifteen overs.

You want big partnerships, one set batter in for the majority of the innings. Nobody took the bull by the horns for England who were perhaps a batter light.

Maybe there is space for a Danni Wyatt as well as Alice Capsey, especially when Nat Sciver-Brunt is back to bowling later in the summer. It's something for them to look at.

It was a strange innings for England, bar Maia Bouchier (17) all their top seven scored more than 20, but no batter made more than Alice Capsey's 44.

Wickets fell periodically, around some reasonable batting.

It's the first game of the series, England have not played a huge amount of cricket and they're still hitting their straps. They'll be as disappointed as anyone that they've not put in the performance they'd have wanted to.
