  3. 'Want to keep getting better'published at 17:46 British Summer Time 26 June

Final bit from England captain Heather Knight on the depth of talent available: "We have some brilliant players on the bench as well. We are building that squad depth now. Trying to improve and get better is what we are all about.

"You have to do that when there's people looking over shoulder [at your place in the side]. We want to keep getting better and our last two ODI performances are something we want to do consistently.

"We have talked about being a bit smarter as a group and we did that well today, communicating what the right pace was for the ball."

Bouchier fell just before England had secured victory, Brooke Halliday adding a wicket to her 51 with the bat...

And so it was left to England captain Heather Knight to stroke the winning boundary.

England head to New Road on Sunday with a 1-0 lead in this three match series.

  5. 'Bell will bounce back'published at 17:41 British Summer Time 26 June

More from England captain Heather Knight on the sloppy start by their bowlers, and Lauren Bell: "If you overpitch one on that pitch it was lovely to face. You had less margin for error particularly with the new ball.

"It was one of those where you had to hit the lengths a little bit harder. Lauren's working through it. She won't be pleased with how she bowled today. We back her because we know how great she is with the ball. You don't want to see that for a player but she'll bounce back and is made of tough stuff. She is a key player for us so I'm not too worried about her.

"The bowling from Lauren Filer at the other end was outstanding. She has worked hard on improving her accuracy, and consistently find that length. It was an outstanding ball to get Suzie out at the top of the order. There's always things we can do better,."

And the carnage continued, Beaumont bringing up a 46 ball half-century - her 20th in ODI cricket - with this huge six off Amelia Kerr...

Not to be outdone, Bouchier reached the same landmark later that over. She got there in just 38 deliveries.

  7. Postpublished at 13 overs

The early question was whether England, in pursuit of just 157 for victory, would stroll towards their target or sprint from the start?

Tammy Beaumont answered that question emphatically, helping herself to boundaries from the first two (legitimate) balls of the innings.

Not to be outdone, Maia Bouchier also got off to a flyer...

  8. Postpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 26 June

Brooke Halliday top scored for New Zealand with 51, including this six from Charlie Dean...

But Dean was otherwise exceptional, helping herself to 4 for 38 from nine overs. Her wickets included bowling Isabella Gaze for 12...

And having Jess Kerr brilliantly caught behind by Amy Jones...

Halliday was last to fall, giving Sarah Glenn her first wicket. From 56 for 1, New Zealand had slipped to 156 all out.

  9. 'Really good way to start the series'published at 17:34 British Summer Time 26 June

England captain Heather Knight: "It was really pleasing. I think the way we attacked that game was brilliant. I think the fact we kept looking for wickets throughout the innings was the really pleasing thing. Obviously we got some early ones then to keep pushing for wickets, keep being attacking and bowl them out for that score on a pretty decent pitch.

"Then the nonchalance from the top two was very entertaining to watch. I was pretty happy to sit and watch waiting to bat. It was a masterclass from those two.

"They know they wanted to be positive at the top of the order. I think the pitch dictated they were allowed to do that. I thought they were smart with the options they took. They were aggressive but really good by hitting hard down the ground and taking advantage of a bit of width. Really pleasing. It can't better than that from an opening partnership. A really good way to start the series."

    But thereafter, wickets fell regularly.

Georgia Plimmer was a touch unfortunate to be run out just as she had found some fluency...

And soon both Amelia Kerr and Sophie Devine had been removed by Sophie Ecclestone...who else?!

  11. Postpublished at 17:31 British Summer Time 26 June

England's CLS victory was comprehensive but they were not quite dominant from the off. Instead, Suzie Bates got New Zealand off to a bit of a flyer...

And while Bates fell foul of a little bit of Lauren Filer magic, New Zealand had reached a respectable 56 for 1 by the end of the powerplay.

  12. 'We will reflect and come back harder'published at 17:27 British Summer Time 26 June

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine: “We are really disappointed with our performance. I thought our start with the bat was exceptional, but England pegged us back.

“We’ve got to trust the work we’ve been doing for the last six or seven weeks. We’ve got a big series coming up. We will reflect and come back harder."

On what what her side can do to improve: “We’ve got to identify some key areas where we went wrong but we’ve also got to take some positives.

"Georgia Plimmer was brilliant with the bat, and Brooke Halliday was exceptional with bat and ball. There are still positives from the performance and we’ve got to take those and move forward."

On how they can address their below-par batting: “We know we are going to have to score 250, 260 and we were on par for that if we’d batted all of our overs.

"If we can stick around for the 50 overs of cricket and build key partnerships, we know we can take the game deep. There are a few learnings for the batting unit but it’s not all doom and gloom."

  13. Postpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 26 June

More from Charlie Dean on whether England's trio of spinners spurring each other on: "I think so, yes. Massively. We have three really good spinners and I think more often than not they make it into our team.

"I think it just pushes everyone to keep getting better. I think if you doing that then selection will take care of itself. That is what I am trying to do anyway. I am pretty happy every time I put on this shirt."

  14. Postpublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 26 June

Player of the match Charlie Dean: "How good were our openers today? Tammy and Maia set a batting blueprint of how we want to go about our ODI cricket. To finish the game in that way is pretty brilliant. It was a really good team performance today.

On how own game is developing: "I think I have been working more and more consistent. My best ball is pretty good so just trying to bowl that as often as possible. Mixing up my pace and hoping for the best.

"The bowlers who bowled before set it out, bowling the tricky overs. I was really happy to be out there."

  15. Postpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 26 June

Tammy Beaumont strolls off wearing a huge grin underneath her heartily applied sunscreen. She finishes on 76 from just 69 balls - her 20th half-century in ODI cricket.

Maia Bouchier also reached that landmark only to fall with England's chase almost done. She made 67 from 50 deliveries.

Their opening partnership? 137 from just 17.2 overs. Rapid.

  16. How's stat?!published at 17:11 British Summer Time 26 June

    Phil Long
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

England won with 172 balls remaining, which is the most balls they've won with against New Zealand.

  17. Postpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 26 June

    Frankie Mackay
Ex-New Zealand all-rounder on BBC Sounds

That is a brilliant win for England. They were clinical in every stage of the innings.

  18. England win by 9 wicketspublished at 21.2 overs

Heather Knight strokes the winning boundary and England have the 157 runs they needed to go one nil up in the series. This has been a comprehensive victory.

  19. Eng 153-1published at 21 overs

The hard work is done here. Time to bask in a little bit of glory (not for too long though, there are still two more games in this series and then five T20Is).

Durham, who are the usual occupants of CLS, belt out Blaydon Races, post-victory. I wonder if England will go for something local?

  20. 150 runs

    Eng 151-1published at 20.3 overs

An outside edge takes Beaumont to 75 and England to 151. A ripple of applause from a sun-baked crowd at CLS.
