  1. Eng 119-1published at 15 overs

Back-to-back overs without a boundary for England. By my calculations, that's the first time that's happened today.

And yet, Duckett and Root have still added 13 runs to England's total during these two overs.

Well Carlos, your wish is Shai Hope's command.

Here comes the left-arm spin of Gudakesh Motie.

I am looking forward to seeing some left-arm bowlers bowling to the left-hand batter, Ben Duckett. It often drags the batter out of their comfort zone and forces them to play which gives you more chances.

You lose a wicket, you gain an opening.

A week that started off with a cricket tournament celebrating the life of Carisbrooke High School old boys captain Ian Heal ‘Skip’ on the Isle of Wight who died last year at the age of just 50, raising £10k for Mountbatten IOW Hospice. Ending with a trip to Edgbaston, where he would enjoy to come to watch cricket.

100 up for England inside 13 overs. A diving Jewel Andrew can't prevent Joe Root from adding another boundary to the tally.

England's run rate is above eight an over.

Since the start of 2024, Ben Duckett has averaged close to 69 while maintaining a strike rate of 115 in the first 10overs of an ODI innings.

Only three openers from Full Member nations have had a strike rate higher than Duckett's (Jake Fraser-McGurk, Rohit Sharma and Travis Head), but none have had a better average.

  8. Eng 99-1published at 12 overs

After Alzarri Joseph's miserly over, the pressure is immediately released as Joe Root reverse sweeps through a gaping hole in the field for four.

It's not all boundary biffing from Root and Duckett, however. They dash a few singles to take seven off the over.

It will be interesting to see whether Will Jacks can do what Jamie Smith can do when he is batting at number seven. Maybe he is not going to be kept in the plans for this team.

You want to have clear defined roles and you don't want that top seven changing as much as possible. That's why England were so successful in white-ball cricket from 2015-2019.

I think the yellow numbers are on the jumpers, as they probably only have one set to last the series. The shirts underneath have blue numbers.

You know what, Tom? I think you might be right. Very well spotted. 10 points.

That's comfortably the best over of the day for West Indies. Just two singles from it.

This has been a good start by England, but we must not forget that powerplay batting is what England have been fairly good at for the last few years. I am most interested to see how England will approach the game after the 10th over.

    Duckett 44, Root 8

The penultimate ball of the powerplay is a no ball and Joe Root cashes in with a boundary. That just about sums up West Indies' day so far.

Plenty of you have been writing in about the numbers on West Indies' shirts.

The blue is for Blue for Bob Day, which raises awareness of prostate cancer and money for the Bob Willis Fund. Why some of the players have blue numbers and others have yellow, I can't tell you.

That even brought a smile from Alzarri Joseph. It was clever and the execution was great.

None of the batters needed to use that shot in the first few overs so it shows that Joseph is getting the batters out of their comfort zone.

Duckett hits 'beautiful' ramp shot over wicketkeeper Hope for four

That's quite outrageous from Ben Duckett. He telegraphs what he's going to do but his scooped four over the wicketkeeper's head is still delightful.

However, West Indies have looked sharper since Alzarri Joseph's introduction into the attack.

This is the fourth different opening pair for England in ODIs since the start of the 2023 ODI World Cup. In this time frame, England have had eight half-century stands for their opening partnership but only one century-plus stand.

England's conversion rate is the third-worst among Full Member nations in this time period (after New Zealand and Bangladesh). England's last century-plus stand in ODIs was between Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan against Bangladesh in the 2023 World Cup.
