That was Shubman Gill's seventh Test hundred and his second in consecutive Tests. It came off 199 balls, with his 11th four. He had 42 runs off 122 balls and then made 60 off 77 to reach three figures.

Ben Stokes was not happy there because that delivery which allowed India to get to 300 was an absolute gimme.

  4. Ind 303-5published at 82 overs

And that's 300 up for India, something which felt a little uncertain when they lost two wickets in two overs shortly after tea.

Shubman Gill runs two off the second ball of the over and slices the fourth for four. If only he'd hit the sixth for six. That would have been excellent. He takes an underwhelming single and ruins my fun.

I understand we want more time with the new ball.... But that didn't mean we put Gill's hundred on a plate and cut it up for him!

Hands on heads and caps pulled over eyes all round as Ravindra Jadeja edges the final ball of the over through gully.

India are closing in on 300.

Brydon Carse will share the new ball.

  14. Ind 283-5published at 79 overs

Trees are waving enthusiastically in the Edgbaston breeze.

One over until England can take the new ball.

That new ball is going to be interesting because England will want an impact, but also for India, the ball hasn't been racing off the bat, so they'll be wanting to score some runs quickly.

Jaiswal drives Tongue for consecutive fours

Josh Tongue’s average speed today has been 87.2 mph, which is the fastest registered average speed, in an innings, of his Test career to date. He has also been more accurate than ever before, with 31% of balls on a good line and length and 17% of balls hitting the stumps.

Despite these encouraging raw numbers, India have played him brilliantly, scoring at 5.1 rpo and only playing 6.9% false shots. His previous lowest innings false shot percentage is 15% - he has been well and truly nullified by the Indian batters today.

River Irwell? No it’s the Rea.

    Anon

The Rea does indeed run by Edgbaston. Sadly, I'm about 100 miles north on the Irwell/Ship Canal.

  19. Ind 275-5published at 77 overs

Ravindra Jadeja is rumbling into life. He capitalises on a slower ball from Shoaib Bashir and picks up another four in the leg-side.

India's sixth-wicket pair have put on 64 runs off 93 balls.

Re: the Irwell or the Ship Canal, I believe they change from one to the other somewhere between Pomona and Castlefield but I don’t know where.

    Paul

Thanks Paul. It does seem to be a grey area, although by that geography, I'm on the Ship Canal. I might spend my evening searching for a concrete answer.
