Summary

  1. drinks break

    Ind 243-5published at 68 overs

    Gill 77, Jadeja 13

There's a lot of head-shaking going on from Ben Stokes, who has his collar up Eric Cantona-style.

He's disappointed with his first delivery, which Ravindra Jadeja chops for two. Two balls later, Shubman Gill swings and misses wildly and it goes through to the wicketkeeper. Another shake of the head.

    Time for drinks.

  2. Ind 238-5published at 67 overs

India lost two wickets in quick succession earlier in the evening session but Shubman Gill (76) and Ravindra Jadeja (nine) are rebuilding solidly.

  3. Ind 232-5published at 66 overs

Boom. Shubman Gill gobbles up the short ball, pulling it square for four. Thank you very much, Ben.

Ravindra Jadeja picks up a four of his own, a cut racing along the ground and beating the outstretched Shoaib Bashir who comes sliding around the rope.

A productive over for India. Nine from it.

India are five down. If England take another wicket then they'll definitely take the new ball when they get chance.

The England game plan is a lot better today compared to the first match. They're bowling a lot straighter.

You'll have to wait a while, Ruth.

Brydon Carse is continuing in the attack for the time being and he bowls a maiden to Ravindra Jadeja.

I'm really hoping that today we'll see a five-fer from Wizard Woakes on his home ground.

A great day so far for Chris Woakes, who has been the pick of the bowlers today, drawing comfortably the most false shots (16%) of any England bowler. He has hit a good line and length more than any other seamer (48%) as well as finding the most lateral movement (1.2° combined swing and seam).

  9. Ind 223-5published at 64 overs

Ben Stokes ruefully drags his hand through his hair a couple of times during his 11th over.

The first is triggered by a front-foot no ball, his third of the day. The second follows Ravindra Jadeja nearly inside-edging onto his stumps.

Down to the Indian lower order. Time for Tongue who must be licking his lips.

    John from Leicester

Into the tail. It's Tongue time.

    Sean, Forest Hill

Sorry John and Sean - the skipper has chosen to bring himself into the attack. Maybe he didn't read this piece Steven Finn did on Tongue v The Tail. Ben Stokes to bowl.

Magnificent shot from Shubman Gill. He rifled that through extra cover past Ben Stokes at full stretch.

  12. Ind 218-5published at 63 overs

Matt's prediction (@16:43) was right. Brydon Carse has returned to the attack.

India dart through for a quick single after Ravindra Jadeja drops the ball into the covers. Ben Stokes nails the stumps following a one-handed pick up but Shubman Gill is safe.

Two balls later, Gill creams one past the diving Stokes and through extra cover for four. Carse is unhappy with himself.

Cricket is such a funny game. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant had done so well together then Pant gives his wicket away and Nitish Kumar Reddy comes to the crease and that's not the leave he wanted.

Nitish Kumar Reddy has been castled. It's a misjudgment from Reddy and he's undone.

Nitish Kumar Reddy won't want to see that one again.

He mistakenly leaves a delivery from Chris Woakes and it angles into his stumps. The impact of the ball on the stumps makes an absolutely beautiful sound. Thunk.

Fantastic by England in the field after tea. They knew if they could build that pressure on Pant he would so something rash.
