Shubman Gill's now got the physio out working on his lower back. Is it cramp?

  2. Ind 270-5published at 76 over

Lovely timing from Ravindra Jadeja to swat Josh Tongue for four.

Shubman Gill also sets the boundary in his sights but Ben Duckett stops the ball with his body on the rope.

  4. Ind 262-5published at 75 overs

Good running from Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill as they add three singles to India's total.

Equally, it's been good bowling from Shoaib Bashir, who is holding up an end nicely.

Bashir's ball that got Pant out was 46.0mph, the second-slowest recorded wicket-taking ball by an England bowler in Tests this decade (after Parkinson's one Test wicket - Southee at Lord's in 2022, 43.8mph)

  6. Ind 259-5published at 74 overs

A tight over from Josh Tongue on his return to the attack, conceding just one single.

Ravindra Jadeja has 23 while Shubman Gill has 82.

Good news for all you Josh Tongue fans... he'll bowl the 74th over.

India are trying to win back the session after losing two quick wickets early in it. This partnership is moving along quite nicely. The rate at 3.53 is good for England.

England will be very pleased with their work so far.

  9. Ind 258-5published at 73 overs

Ravindra Jadeja goes after a fuller delivery from Shoaib Bashir and absolutely hammers him for four down the ground.

It's been six or seven overs since the previous boundary but India have kept the scoreboard ticking. Their run rate remains north of 3.5.

  10. Ind 252-5published at 72 overs

Ben Stokes has his hands on his knees a couple of times during his 15th over. India run singles off five of the six balls. They've run well today.

Meanwhile, I'm currently doubting whether the water course by the window is the Irwell or the Ship Canal. If anyone knows where one becomes the other, I'm all ears. Either way, a boat was on it and the view is lovely.

Shubman Gill taps the ball off his pads for the only run of the over.

A boat has just sailed up the Irwell. Cricket to the left of me, river to the right... I could get used to this view.

Ben Stokes' 14th over - and fourth of this spell - yields two singles.

Stokes just can’t help but bowl himself. England need another wise head to tell him when to throw the ball to someone else.

  15. Ind 244-5published at 69 overs

A single for Ravindra Jadeja is the only run off the 69th over.

Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell and Sam Cook - not selected for the second Test - are lounging in a shady stand.

Ben Stokes will continue from the other end.

    Jadeja survives close lbw shout

Huge appeal immediately after drinks as a delivery from Shoaib Bashir thuds into Ravindra Jadeja's pad.

After a lengthy discussion, Ben Stokes opts against the review. It would have been umpire's call. England had to watch two of those this morning, so they're probably glad they didn't go upstairs for another dose of disappointment.

India will be a little bit more worried than the last game. Washington Sundar can bat but if you don't get 450 on this pitch, as a batting unit you will be disappointed.

Jasprit Bumrah isn't playing so there's more pressure on the young seamers and they know the pitches are a lot better now. They know this England side can score at a good strike rate.

India are 243-5 after 68 overs, with just over an hour left in the day.

Who will be the happier side at the end of day one? Time for some early predictions. Thumbs up for England. Thumbs down for India.

There was a field placed for Rishabh Pant because England know he'll go for it when the ball goes above his eye line. Pant saw that but he didn't time it well.

He picked the right ball but the execution wasn't there because of how slow the ball was.

He likes to chat with his partner and tell them what he's trying to do. Whenever he's talking he says he's watching the ball but doesn't want to give away anything to the bowler or fielder.

He doesn't want to be predictable.
