Summary

  1. Ind 210-4published at 61 overs

Nitish Kumar Reddy takes three balls to get off the mark, darting through for a quick single. Given both batters made it, it's good running, but he probably didn't need to be quite so keen this early in his innings.

A wicket and two singles from Shoaib Bashir's 13th over.

Full credit to Alex Hartley for the wicket of Pant there, excellent work!

It's such a weak dismissal. It's a dismissal of a man who's bored of his own innings and he's thinking he has to go for it.

Rishabh Pant's given his wicket away there. That's absolute Christmas for a spinner.

Rishabh Pant has paid the penalty. He couldn't hold back. We were talking about patience and he walks away.

Shoaib Bashir strikes a mighty blow and it's just what England needed.

'A mighty mighty blow' - Pant caught at long-on for 25 off Bashir

Rishabh Pant holes out to Zak Crawley, who came running around the boundary to long-on.

Pant is quite dejected as he leaves the field, captain Shubman Gill looks decidedly unimpressed. A gift for England.

Given how India's middle and lower order performed at Headingley, there's a lot of pressure on Gill's shoulders now.

India are grinding it out and it's not easy for England's bowlers. They're having to be patient because it's a very flat surface.

You feel as though India will have learnt from that first Test. They'll not want to build the platform then give England a sniff.

  7. Ind 208-3published at 60 overs

    Gill 57, Pant 25

A sharp tumbling stop from Ben Duckett on the boundary saves two as Shubman Gill cuts hard through point.

India take six runs off the 60th over, running on all but one ball.

Mid-over, the umpire went for a little stomp down the wicket.

I agree with ‘Anon’ at 16:20. England ‘fan’ memories are so short. Show some respect for the team, we’re not going to be on top in every moment in every Test. India are a decent side. A true fan supports the lads through the trickier patches - otherwise you don't have the right to celebrate the victories.

Well, that certainly wasn't dull from Rishabh Pant. Down on one knee, he pulls Shoaib Bashir for four and then topples over. 200 up for India.

He and Shubman Gill also take a single apiece.

Shubman Gill is intercepting the ball a long way in front of himself to Chris Woakes other than any other bowler.

Woakes bowls from the middle of the crease but occasionally he'll bowl from very wide and a batter will feel it's angling back into his stumps. But if it holds it's line it keeps the outside edge very much in play.

125 balls is Shubman Gill’s slowest half-century in Test cricket. He typically scores his fifties far quicker, with four fifties coming in under 70 deliveries, but he has played the situation superbly today

I don't know Tony... there's something quite calming about attritional cricket.

England's penchant for bowling first is producing results, admittedly, but on the flip side, it makes for some pretty dull opening days, watching the players toil in the field.

Something has woken the crowd up. Jofra Archer is given a big ovation as he walks around in front of the Hollies with some drinks.

Some of the England fans are on their feet singing his song.

England will be very pleased to have changed the ball as it was offering nothing through the air. In the 10 overs prior to the ball change they were finding just 0.2° of swing. For reference, in the first 10 overs of the day, England’s seamers were finding 0.8° of swing, four times as much.

  16. Ind 193-3published at 57 overs

It's been a solid innings from Shubman Gill. I have to confess his milestone rather crept up on me.

Given India's middle/lower order issues at Headingley, India will need their skipper to stick around for a long while yet.

Shubman Gill brings up his half-century with a four. He steps down to Shoaib Bashir and pummels him over mid-on - it's centimetres away from being a six.

50 runs off 125 balls for the India captain.

I swear England fans have goldfish memories. This pitch is incredibly flat and India aren't getting away from us. Headingley was only a week ago and we've already forgotten how that game went.

Lovely shot from Shubman Gill to finish the 56th over. A clip through mid-wicket brings four runs.

Is it too early to say India are playing for the draw? They must have seen the weekend forecast!
