    Oh!

Sam Curran has to scramble back to his ground having set off for an unwise single. He would have been run out had Keacy Carty hit with a throw from mid-on.

Sam Curran has started nicely but I'm not sure there's much positive to say about this technique...

It's a small win but England have survived to drinks.

This is the 15th time England have lost four or more powerplay wickets in an ODI since the white ball 'reset' in 2015.

    In the previous 14 instances - 4 wins, 9 losses, 1 tie.

  5. Eng 43-4published at 14 overs

Going back to my earlier point, how many of this England batting line-up with be in their first-choice top seven?

    Two?

That hard length is still proving difficult to hit as Alzarri Joseph concedes only a single.

    Kieran Parmley
    Cricviz analyst

England's 24-4 was their lowest score after the powerplay in an ODI since February 2023, when they found themselves 20-3 against South Africa at Kimberley.

Their lowest since 2015 - and the original white-ball reset - was 18-5 against Australia at Adelaide in January 2018.

  7. Eng 41-4published at 13 overs

    Salt 14, Curran 14

The introduction of spin for the first time in the form of left-arm tweaker Gudakesh Motie does little to halt Sam Curran's good start as the Surrey all-rounder drives through the covers.

  8. England's lowest ODI totalspublished at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2024

It has not been a great start for England to put it mildly. So much so that we've done a bit of digging into their lowest totals in one-day international cricket.

They've still got some work to do to get past any of these...

    • 86 v Australia, Old Trafford, 2001
    • 88 v Sri Lanka, Dambulla, 2003
    • 89 v New Zealand, Wellington, 2002
    • 93 v Australia, Headingley, 1975
    • 94 v Australia, Melbourne, 1979
  9. Eng 35-4published at 12 overs

    Salt 13, Curran 9

Sam Curran, to his credit, has come out looking good. Having cut a four at the four at the end of the previous over, he swipes at a short ball from Alzarri Joseph to take four more through mid-wicket.

There's a length on this pitch - a good one that is neither full nor short - that is proving uncomfortable.

Jordan Cox averages 27 against the short ball in T20 cricket. So far in international cricket (ODIs & T20Is) his record against the short ball is 18 balls, 8 runs, 4 dismissals with an average of 2.

  11. Eng 29-4published at 11 overs

It has to be remembered this is not the batting line-up England would want to pick. Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett are all absent because of the schedule. Ben Stokes would probably be in their best ODI XI too while Jos Buttler is injured, although it is hoped he will be back for the T20s.

Alzarri Joseph is coming back. it looks like he's calmed down a bit.

Hmmm, the white ball reset might need a reset.

  13. Eng 24-4published at 10 overs

Sam Curran would have planned to have his feet up throughout the powerplay (and much of the remaining 30 overs). Instead he's out in the middle already.

    This is getting ugly.

England's skipper Liam Livingstone, the man who scored a hundred in the previous match, goes as he tries to hack a drive to a length ball.

It wasn't full enough for the shot and he nicks behind too.

  15. Eng 24-3published at 9.2 overs

    A four!

A lovely one too off the bat of Liam Livingstone.

The continued absence of Alzarri Joseph remains a mystery. This pitch, though looking like belter, is clearly assisting the quick bowlers. Shai Hope would surely love to call on his fastest bowler while the ball is hard and relatively new.

  17. Eng 19-3published at 9 overs

    Salt 10, Livingstone 2

My plea for this to be a space of cricketing positivity did not last long. England top-order collapses do that to you.

Phil Salt gets a single but England's run-rate is in danger of dropping below two.

Getting very disillusioned with the England selectors, looking to the future is good but balance that with winning the now too!
