Going back to my earlier point, how many of this England batting line-up with be in their first-choice top seven?

England's 24-4 was their lowest score after the powerplay in an ODI since February 2023, when they found themselves 20-3 against South Africa at Kimberley.

Their lowest since 2015 - and the original white-ball reset - was 18-5 against Australia at Adelaide in January 2018.

The introduction of spin for the first time in the form of left-arm tweaker Gudakesh Motie does little to halt Sam Curran's good start as the Surrey all-rounder drives through the covers.

It has not been a great start for England to put it mildly. So much so that we've done a bit of digging into their lowest totals in one-day international cricket.

They've still got some work to do to get past any of these...

Sam Curran, to his credit, has come out looking good. Having cut a four at the four at the end of the previous over, he swipes at a short ball from Alzarri Joseph to take four more through mid-wicket.

There's a length on this pitch - a good one that is neither full nor short - that is proving uncomfortable.

Jordan Cox averages 27 against the short ball in T20 cricket. So far in international cricket (ODIs & T20Is) his record against the short ball is 18 balls, 8 runs, 4 dismissals with an average of 2.

It has to be remembered this is not the batting line-up England would want to pick. Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett are all absent because of the schedule. Ben Stokes would probably be in their best ODI XI too while Jos Buttler is injured, although it is hoped he will be back for the T20s.

Alzarri Joseph is coming back. it looks like he's calmed down a bit.

Sam Curran would have planned to have his feet up throughout the powerplay (and much of the remaining 30 overs). Instead he's out in the middle already.

The continued absence of Alzarri Joseph remains a mystery. This pitch, though looking like belter, is clearly assisting the quick bowlers. Shai Hope would surely love to call on his fastest bowler while the ball is hard and relatively new.

My plea for this to be a space of cricketing positivity did not last long. England top-order collapses do that to you.
