That's your lot for day one, folks, after New Zealand and England have treated us to another entertaining day of Test cricket.

It ends with the match nicely poised after Ben Stokes' side overcame a wicketless first session to reduce the Black Caps to 231-7, only for some late hitting from Mitchell Santner and Tim Southee to take the hosts past 300.

You can read Stephan Shemilt's report from Hamilton here.

We'll be back for day two at Seddon Park from 21:45 GMT tonight. Be sure to join us then!

No doubt it will be a bit of a frustration but it was Mitchell Santner, who is an all-rounder, who did most of the damage, Mark.

Plus, seeing an attacking approach rewarded on this pitch will please England, who will hope to be batting for the vast majority of day two.

An enthralling first day in Hamilton and it ended with New Zealand taking 76 runs from the last eight overs.

That has taken them up to 300 and beyond after being put in to bat.

But England will be pleased enough to have taken nine wickets, especially after going wicketless before lunch.

  6. Close of play - NZ 315-9published at 82 overs

    Santner 50, O'Rourke 0

Excellent fielding in the deep from Jacob Bethell denies Mitchell Santner another boundary after a handsome cover drive.

There is then a delay before the last ball as Brydon Carse is struggling with cramp.

Once he's back on his feet, Matthew Potts charges in one last time in the day... and Santner clubs it over long-off for six!

That brings up his half-century from 54 balls. What a way to end the day.

  7. NZ 307-9published at 81.3 overs

    OK, maybe not!

Full and wide - and Mitchell Santner hammers it high over extra cover for four.

  8. NZ 303-9published at 81.2 overs

Two balls into the over, both pitched up by Matthew Potts, and both defended solidly by Mitchell Santner.

The New Zealand all-rounder seems content to see this one and come back tomorrow.

Time for one more over before stumps and Matthew Potts is on to bowl it.

Mitchell Santner is on strike. How will be play this?

  10. Not outpublished at 81 overs

    NZ 303-9

Yep, the extra bounce from the new ball saves Will O'Rourke.

Just the one wicket in the over from Gus Atkinson then and England are now out of reviews.

They'll hope, with New Zealand nine down, it doesn't matter all that much.

  11. England reviewpublished at 81 overs

    NZ 303-9

England are convinced they have got Will O'Rourke lbw but it's given not out.

Ben Stokes sends it upstairs. Too high maybe?

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 80.4 overs

    Southee c Carse b Atkinson 23 (NZ 303-9)

Tim Southee falls looking for Test six number 99.

Slightly fuller from Gus Atkinson but Southee stills tries to heave it away leg side.

The ball goes straight up - and a long way up - so Brydon Carse has plenty of time to get in from mid-off and get underneath it to take the catch.

A fun cameo from Southee and he leaves the field to another great ovation.

  13. NZ 303-8published at 80.2 overs

A leading edge from Tim Southee runs away through backward point and when the chasing Ben Duckett makes a meal of it, the ball runs away for four.

That's 300 up for New Zealand. How many more to come?

  14. 6 runs

    NZ 299-8published at 80.1 overs

It doesn't matter what ball England want to use, Tim Southee is going to hit it into the crowd.

He takes a couple of steps down and swings the ball over the leg side for his third six already!

  15. new ball

England take the second new ballpublished at 05:21 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December

No messing around from England. The second new ball is taken immediately.

Gus Atkinson will have first use of it.

  16. NZ 293-8published at 80 overs

Mitchell Santner carves the last ball of an expensive over from Ben Stokes for four.

It's 17 from it and the second new ball is now available.

  17. 6 runs

    NZ 288-8published at 79.4 overs

    And again!

The first was in front of square, this one is behind but they're both six in the scorebook.

Tim Southee is enjoying his final Test so far...

  18. 6 runs

    NZ 282-8published at 79.2 overs

England can have all the ideas they want, Tim Southee is going for it!

He nails a short ball from Ben Stokes into the crowd for his 96th maximum in Tests!

  19. NZ 276-8published at 79 overs

A bouncer sails harmlessly down the leg side to end the over.

It means England will have Tim Southee in their sights again to start the next.

Southee started his Test career by smashing England around the park in Napier, he might quite fancy doing so again to finish it in Hamilton.

The tourists will have other ideas, of course.

  20. NZ 276-8published at 78.3 overs

    Santner 34, Southee 0

Neither one thing nor the other in terms of length from Gus Atkinson and far too wide.

As a result, the ball sits up nicely for Mitchell Santner to thrash it through point for four.
