  1. NZ 227-6published at 68.1 overs

    Thanks, Mike.

Yes, England have battled their way into a strong position with an hour or so left in day one.

Tom Blundell seems intent on mounting a New Zealand counter, though, and drives Brydon Carse for two to start the over.

The players are taking drinks - it's been a good first hour or so for England, who are now decidedly on top.

Here's Sam Drury to take you through to the close.

The last time Ben Stokes bowled more than 16 overs in a Test innings was back in December 2022, against Pakistan.

  4. NZ 225-6published at 68 overs

Stokes returns in place of Atkinson - still no sign of Shoaib Bashir in this innings.

Blundell hits the first two balls of the over for fours through the covers - the second of those a full toss that's rightly punished.

A single brings Santner on strike and he gets his own cover four - an expensive return for the England skipper, who's bowling his 17th over of the day, although he finishes with two dot balls.

With the dismissal of Daryl Mitchell, Gus Atkinson has taken 50 Test wickets in just 11 appearances.

Since 1978, Atkinson is the only English bowler to average less than 25 with the ball while under 27 years old (minimum 10 matches).

  6. NZ 212-6published at 67 overs

Mitchell Santner, back in the side for this Test after missing the first two, sees off the final four balls of the Potts over.

Potts was England's change for this match and he's now got 3-63, working out well.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 66.2 overs

    Phillips c Crawley b Potts 5 (NZ 212-6)

Straight down the throat of Crawley!

A big waft at a wide-ish Potts delivery from Glenn Phillips, feet going nowhere, and he skews the ball straight to England's opener at backward point.

He doesn't have to move - but Phillips does... back to the pavilion.

  8. NZ 212-5published at 66 overs

Atkinson sends down four dot balls to Phillips before the New Zealand batter gets a single into mid-wicket.

The England seamer then over-steps with his final delivery, then Blundell defends its legitimate follow-up.

  9. NZ 210-5published at 65 overs

A Potts maiden to Blundell, who has six runs from 18 deliveries.

New Zealand batters have left 26% of the balls in this innings, the highest for any innings by two teams in this series.

  11. NZ 210-5published at 64 overs

Glenn Phillips is next up for New Zealand - he chases Atkinson a little and ball squirts away for four through backward point.

We were talking at tea about the cliche of a couple of wickets changing the complexion of the innings - we've had two since tea, and it's fair to say the home side are now definitely on the back foot.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 63.3 overs

    Mitchell c Stokes b Atkinson 14 (NZ 206-5)

    Stokes holds on at cover!

Another punched, uppish drive from Mitchell and he punts Atkinson's ball towards the England skipper, who takes the catch diving to his left.

Atkinson's 50th Test wicket in just his 11th Test - meanwhile, having reached 105 without loss, New Zealand have lost five wickets for 101 runs.

  13. NZ 204-4published at 63 overs

Blundell plays a risky game against, dropping a shot just short of Brydon Carse at mid-wicket.

He closes the over with a better shot - a drive through the covers that's chased down by two England fielders, two taken.

If the Duckett 'drops' off Latham were half-chances at best, Root has made that look harder than it was. Maybe he saw it late, but he collapsed his body away from the ball. Should have at least got his hands to it.

  15. dropped catch

Blundell dropped on 0published at 62.2 overs

    Ah, that carried!

Blundell edges Potts into the cordon, where Joe Root seems a little late to react at first slip - he gets a hand on the ball but doesn't hold on.

The ball runs away for four, bringing up New Zealand's 200, while Potts roars in justified frustration.

  16. NZ 198-4published at 62 overs

Not a drop, but close to a chance.

Mitchell goes for a punchy-drive off Atkinson and edges the ball aerially past Ben Duckett at backward point.

The England opener flings himself at it, but isn't getting anywhere near and the ball races away for four.

  17. NZ 193-4published at 61 overs

A third maiden after tea for England as Matty Potts sends down six dots to new batter Tom Blundell.

The New Zealand wicketkeeper frustrated the tourists in Wellington with a century that held up their march to victory, but has otherwise made scores of 17, 0 and 16 in this series.

Today, Daryl Mitchell took 20 balls to get off the mark, the most he has ever taken in a Test innings. His previous longest was 11 balls, which happened twice - in 2022 and 2024.

  19. NZ 193-4published at 60 overs

With Williamson gone, Mitchell picks up the scoring mantle.

He gets off the mark from his 20th delivery, driving Atkinson through mid-off for four.

That's followed immediately by a second boundary, up on his toes and struck through the covers.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 59 overs

    Williamson b Potts 44 (NZ 185-4)

But Potts gets his man at the end of the over!

Williamson defends the final ball, edging down into his crease. The ball loops up and down towards the stumps - the New Zealand veteran flings out a foot to try and stop impact but he's not close enough and the bails fall.

A big wicket for England, with two batters on zero now at the crease.
