Of the 44 times in which Tom Latham has passed fifty in Test cricket only twice has he done so with a higher false shot percentage than his 24% today - fair to say he's had a touch of fortune.

  2. NZ 131-1published at 38 overs

After a quick warm-up, it is Ben Stokes - rather than Matthew Potts - who is into the attack.

The England skipper offers width to his New Zealand counterpart midway through the over and Tom Latham thrashes the ball away through backward point.

Those are the only four runs from the over.

Ben Stokes is getting loose for another spell.

  4. NZ 127-1published at 37 overs

Good over again from Gus Atkinson, who has bowled well since lunch and got that breakthrough.

    Just a single from it.

Quick reminder of the Kane Williamson vs Matty Potts head-to-head

    3 runs, 32 balls, 3 dismissals - 1.00 average

  6. NZ 126-1published at 36 overs

Banged in short by Brydon Carse and Kane Williamson pulls it dismissively away for four.

Williamson is looking very good early in his innings.

Time to get Matthew Potts on? The Durham seamer has a great record against him.

  7. NZ 121-1published at 35 overs

Well, Jimmy, there are two Will Youngs and this is where the hilarity lies.

One was a singer who won the first series of Pop Idol, the other is a New Zealand cricketer.

There are all manner of jokes that can be made as a result (actually, it's about three or four that get repeated)...

Will Young didn't win either Pop Idol or X Factor.

  9. dropped catch

Latham dropped on 53published at 34.5 overs

    NZ 121-1

Another very tough chance - but it will go down as a drop.

Gus Atkinson squares up Tom Latham as the left-hander attempted to drive through mid-on.

The edge flies quickly, low and to the left of Ben Duckett at third slip. He dives and gets a hand to it but the ball doesn't stick.

Another life for the Black Caps skipper.

  10. 50 runs

50 for Tom Lathampublished at 34.2 overs

    NZ 120-1

Tom Latham goes to his fifty in style.

Driving beautifully down the ground for four.

A 31st half-century in Tests for the New Zealand captain, his first in seven innings.

It's taken him102 balls to get there but he's done a very good job for his side.

  11. NZ 116-1published at 34 overs

    Much better from Brydon Carse.

He beats Kane Williamson first ball of the over with one that shapes away nicely before hitting the batter on the inner thigh with a nip-backer.

Carse is too full later in the over, though, and Williamson drives effortlessly through mid-off for four. Immaculate timing.

  12. NZ 112-1published at 33 overs

Bounce again for Gus Atkinson and Tom Latham, on 49, plays and misses with an ambitious drive off the back foot.

Two come as the last ball of the over deflects down to fine leg and there is some applause from the crowd before the umpire's signal for leg byes.

Latham is still a run shy of his half-century.

  13. NZ 110-1published at 32 overs

Well, Kane Williamson is getting a good chance to have a look at the bowling early in his innings.

After five of his first six balls go by harmlessly wide of off, with Brydon Carse firing the other down leg, the former New Zealand skipper thumps a short, wide ball through the off side for four.

Not exactly how England would have wanted to bowl to the opposition's star batter at the start of his innings.

Kane Williamson averages 60.23 when coming out to bat after 10 overs in his Test career.

That rises to 82.70 in his last 20 Test innings coming in after 10 overs, which includes three hundreds and three double hundreds.

  15. NZ 105-1published at 31 overs

Kane Williamson is the new batter for New Zealand and he doesn't have to play at the last three balls of the over.

Wicket maiden for Gus Atkinson, though. England's main man in 2024 has found the breakthrough again.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 30.3 overs

    Young c Brook b Atkinson 42 (NZ 105-1)

Go on then... Will Young has to leave right now.

I'm ashamed of myself for that but never mind.

It's good bowling from Gus Atkinson, bowling full enough and straight enough that Young has to play.

He does, pushing forward, but the ball swings away just a little to take the edge and Harry Brook dives forward to take a very good low catch at second slip.

Thanks, Alistair. We all love a Will Young gag and it's a valiant effort... but I should tell you that he won Pop Idol, not X Factor.

That Will Young certainly has the X Factor.

    Alistair Brown (not that one)

  19. 100 runs

    NZ 105-0published at 30 overs

    Latham 48, Young 42

    Another freebie from Brydon Carse.

This one is on Tom Latham's pads and he gleefully whips it through square leg for four to bring up the 100 partnership.

Carse went past the bat between those boundaries and finds the edge the ball after the second... but it goes wide of the slips and away for four more.

  20. NZ 97-0published at 29.2 overs

Brydon Carse starts from the other end but his second ball is a half-volley and Tom Latham drives firmly through mid-on for four.

New Zealand are up and running after lunch.
