  1. NZ 185-3published at 58.1 overs

Only two overs for Carse after tea, as Matty Potts takes over.

The Durham seamer has flipped ends a few times already in this innings, he's back at the end he started with.

Williamson fires his first ball through point for four.

  2. NZ 181-3published at 58 overs

A second Atkinson maiden to Mitchell, now 17 balls without scoring.

Mitchell scored 84 in the second innings at Christchurch, but made scores of six and 32 in Wellington.

  3. NZ 181-3published at 57 overs

Brydon Carse hustles in for another over in the Hamilton sunshine, neck chain bouncing and tongue poking out of the side of his mouth.

The England seamer sends down a half-volley that Williamson times perfectly through mid-off for four - he barely moved his bat but the ball raced to the ropes at a fair lick.

  4. NZ 177-3published at 56 overs

Atkinson suceeds where Carse failed, picking up a maiden bowling to Mitchell.

The New Zealand batter has failed to score off his first 11 deliveries.

Well said, Horners, not least because I pretty much offered up that cliche at 3:01.

Got to bring out the hits in the early hours.

Looks like the match situation is poised for the classic commentators’ cliche of “add another couple to the wickets column and it will look very different” or in other words the next session is crucial. If we don’t snare Williamson before the end of play then the decision to bowl first might start to look a bit sketchy.

  7. NZ 177-3published at 55 overs

Williamson denies Brydon Carse a maiden, firmly cutting his final delivery through point for four.

  8. NZ 173-3published at 54 overs

Williamson turns Atkinson to backward square to get New Zealand under way after tea.

He moves to 32, while new batter Daryl Mitchell is still on zero.

Right Gus Atkinson is at the top of his run-up.

Let's crack on with the evening session.

Feels like this could be an interesting session - a couple more wickets and New Zealand tip into quite a challenging position.

They could have done without losing Rachin Ravindra, who burst onto the international scene but is in a bit of a rut form-wise.

He's now made single figures in eight of his last 10 first-class innings, stretching back to the second innings of the second Test against India (and including one domestic match).

The two times he passed 10 were in the first Test in Christchurch, where he scored 34 and 24.

Bad news, Sam - after many months, the mini-rolls are off the offer in a couple of supermarkets and I won't stretch to £4 for 10.

I have just hit the office vending machine for a can of pop and a chocolate bar, though.

    Bring on the sugar crash!

A better session for England and, having taken a wicket in the last over, they will go into tea with a spring in their step.

Can the same be said of Mike Peter? That normally depends on how many chocolate mini-rolls he has left. Regardless, he's back to take you through tea and the start of the evening session...

  13. Tea - NZ 172-3published at 53 overs

    Williamson 31, Mitchell 0

Sightscreen issue resolved and Brydon Carse completes his over, ending it with one that bounces, nips back and hits Daryl Mitchell as he shoulders arms.

That will smart a bit but Mitchell will be back, alongside Kane Williamson, after tea.

Three wickets in the session for England after going wicketless before lunch.

Fair play to the groundstaff, they have got those white boards on pretty quickly.

  15. NZ 172-3published at 52.4 overs

Daryl Mitchell is out with three balls to face before tea.

There has been some needle between him and Brydon Carse in this series and when the batter pulls away with the England man halfway through his run up, that could set it off again.

I don't think Carse can blame the Kiwi this time because there is an issue with the sightscreen - it is a black rather than white surface right now - that is going to take a few moments to rectify.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 52.3 overs

    Ravindra c Duckett b Carse 18 (NZ 172-3)

England get another just before tea!

A loose shot from Rachin Ravindra as he pushes at a ball wide of off and gets a thick edge to Ben Duckett at gully.

After dropping two much tougher chances, Duckett makes no mistake this time.

There is a nervous wait for a no-ball check but Brydon Carse just kept something behind the line and can celebrate his first wicket of the match.

Kane Williamson has been especially aggressive today whenever the ball is pitched anything back of a good length.

    Kane Williamson's strike rate:

    • Full - 26.66
    • Good - 2.94
    • Short - 184.61
  18. NZ 171-2published at 52 overs

    Williamson 30, Ravindra 18

Ben Stokes is into the eighth over of his spell as he continues to plug away on a surface that is offering something, even if only sporadically.

Nothing enough to prise out another wicket for you this time around though, Jamie.

I've woken up about 2am to feed the baby on the first day of all three Tests - this feels like a very boring normal Test score after the madness of the other two. Hoping there's more wickets to read about at the 5am feed...

  20. NZ 169-2published at 51 overs

Kane Williamson adds to his boundary count with a pull shot after Matthew Potts in the deep completely loses sight of the ball.

He is looking around for it and turns the wrong way as it runs past him for four.

Brydon Carse, it is fair to say, is not happy and he lets his Durham team-mate know about it.

It has been a day of frustrations for England so far...
