  1. NZ 272-8published at 78 overs

A lovely moment as Tim Southee walks out to bat in his 107th and final Test.

There is a loud and very warm ovation from the crowd at Seddon Park and a guard of honour from the England team.

After all that, the first ball he faces slides down the leg side.

    Henry c Brook b Stokes 8 (NZ 272-8)

Brilliant from Harry Brook in the boundary.

Matt Henry tries to go again but doesn't make as clean a connection this time.

The ball flies down to Brook at fine leg, he catches it before throwing it up in the air as his momentum takes him over the cushion.

But he's got plenty of time to leap back inside the rope in time to take the catch. A first wicket of the innings for Ben Stokes.

  3. 6 runs

    NZ 272-7published at 77.3 overs

Matt Henry gets in on the act.

He knows the short ball is coming, gets himself into position and hooks it over fine leg for six.

This is turning into a very handy partnership for New Zealand.

  4. NZ 265-7published at 77.1 overs

    Mitchell Santner goes again.

This time flat-batting a short ball back over Ben Stokes' head for four.

This innings has seen an average swing of 1.0 degrees from the pacers, the highest for any single innings in this series so far. The average seam movement is also 0.6 degrees, which is the fourth highest in this series.

  6. NZ 261-7published at 77 overs

After that six, Mitchell Santner gets a single a couple of balls later to complete the scoring for the over.

Three more before England have the option of the second new ball, just 25 minutes left in the day.

The tourists have perhaps just edged it but Santner is looking to swing - quite literally - things back towards New Zealand.

  7. 6 runs

    NZ 260-7published at 76.2 overs

Mitchell Santner backs away and swats a bouncer from Brydon Carse over long-off for six!

I'm not quite sure how he's managed to get it there but they're more useful runs for New Zealand.

  8. Postpublished at 05:01 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December

We're heading into the extra half hour now and they're going to fall well short of the 90 overs in the day again.

We've got another four before the second new ball is available so England will likely only get a couple of overs with it, should they choose to take it tonight.

  9. NZ 254-7published at 76 overs

Slightly more conventional field set as Ben Stokes bowls to Matt Henry this over.

The England captain still sends down a couple of short ones but they're mixed in among some pitched up balls, targeting the stumps.

He goes short to Mitchell Santner late in the over but the left-hander isn't holding back and is rewarded with four, albeit off the glove and over Ollie Pope.

  10. Not outpublished at 75 overs

    NZ 245-7

Yeah, nothing doing. Clear daylight between bat and ball and England lose another review. Just one left for the tourists.

  11. England reviewpublished at 75 overs

    NZ 245-7

Ben Stokes goes upstairs thinking Mitchell Santner might have tickled one down the leg side.

I don't think there is much going for this one...

  12. NZ 239-7published at 74 overs

Mitchell Santner is OK to continue and Ben Stokes changes the angle to over the wicket.

The England skipper sees Santner go across his stumps and fires the ball in fuller, looking to bowl him behind his legs but the left-hander adjusts to keep it out.

    Good battle, this. Maiden.

  13. NZ 239-7published at 73.2 overs

    Oof.

Ben Stokes has really got that one to rear up at Mitchell Santner.

It's a bouncer, really hammered into the pitch and it just follows Santner as he jumps to try and get out of the way.

No such luck as he is clocked right on the badge of his helmet.

Stokes checks that Santner is OK. He seems to be but the physio is out to conduct a concussion test.

  14. NZ 239-7published at 73 overs

After Mitchell Santner drives firmly through the covers for two, the field spreads as England decide it's time for him to see a few bumpers as well.

The left-hander takes on the first such delivery from Brydon Carse before Matt Henry, who is celebrating his 33rd birthday today and has just been serenaded by the Seddon Park crowd as the trumpeter played happy birthday, sees out the over.

  15. NZ 236-7published at 72 overs

Ben Stokes decides it's time for some short stuff and peppers Matt Henry.

He gets one in at the body of Black Caps number nine and the ball balloons up off the shoulder of the bat as he tries to defend it.

Fortunately for Henry, the fielders in the covers can't get in in time to make the catch.

  16. NZ 236-7published at 71 overs

Five dot balls in the over before a loose one to finish from Brydon Carse.

It's angling down leg and Mitchell Santner happily helps the ball down to the fine leg boundary.

There must have been a word from Carse, too, but it's just met with a smile from Santner.

  17. NZ 232-7published at 70 overs

Ben Stokes continues and makes Mitchell Santner dig out a well-directed yorker to start the over.

Santner then sways clear of a bouncer that draws a spectacular take from Ollie Pope as he dives to his right.

Just a leg bye from the over.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 69 overs

    Blundell c Bethell b Carse 21 (NZ 231-7)

    Caught in the covers!

The plan works again for England as Brydon Carse throws the ball up full and very wide, inviting the drive.

Tom Blundell was more than happy to oblige but he is reaching for this one and the ball goes aerial.

It's Jacob Bethell stretching to take a very good catch in the ring.

England will be eyeing the possibility of batting before the close now.

    New Zealand false shot percentage:

    • Session 1: 26% (0 dismissals)
    • Session 2: 22% (3 dismissals)
    • Session 3: 11% (3 dismissals)
  20. NZ 231-6published at 68.5 overs

Genuine edge from Tom Blundell as he plays back to a ball from Brydon Carse.

But there is no carry at all and it falls a yard or so short of Joe Root at first slip.

Blundell isn't concerned at all by that near miss and obliterates a length ball through extra cover for four.

    Some shot.
