Matthew Potts targeted the stumps much more in his third spell than in the previous two. However, he went a bit too straight and slightly fuller, which led to him being hit for runs.

    Economy rate by spell:

    • Spell 1 - 2.83
    • Spell 2 - 4.00
    • Spell 3 - 4.00

    Hitting the stumps percentage:

    • Spell 1 - 6% (Overs 6)
    • Spell 2 - 0% (Overs 4)
    • Spell 3 - 10% (Overs 5)

Ideally, with the inconsistent bounce, it is advisable to target the top of the stumps rather than going fuller.

  2. NZ 165-2published at 50 overs

Right on cue, Ben Stokes gets the ball to shape away from Kane Williamson and bounce that bit more as well.

It whistles past the edge again before Williamson clips a single to fine leg to end the over.

  3. NZ 164-2published at 49 overs

Maiden over to start his spell from Brydon Carse.

England have managed to get the ball to shape a little this afternoon and the odd one is bouncing more than expected but in between, the pitch has been pretty docile.

Maintaining consistent pressure on the batters has not been easy.

A little more than 20 minutes until tea and Brydon Carse is back on for another burst.

This pitch is expected to turn later in the game but England have refrained from using off-spinner Shoaib Bashir so far today.

  5. NZ 164-2published at 48 overs

Good, probing over from Ben Stokes and it starts with a beauty that fizzes past the bat of Kane Williamson.

The next ball gets up but Williamson rides the bounce expertly and guides it down to deep third for four.

He is going to take some shifting here, on a ground where he clearly loves batting.

At The Gabba watching Australia v India. Every time rain stops play here England seem to get a wicket, which is good news as it’s forecast to be on-off showers all day.

    Williamson 20, Ravindra 17

Rachin Ravindra is off to a flyer as he takes Matthew Potts for back-to-back boundaries.

He guides the first between the slips and gully before hitting a sumptuous drive back past the bowler next ball.

  8. NZ 152-2published at 46 overs

Big appeal from England as Ollie Pope dives to his left to take the ball down the leg side.

Ben Stokes is the bowler but despite Pope's efforts to persuade him otherwise, the England skipper isn't interested.

He makes it clear that he thinks it was off the thigh pad, not the bat of Kane Williamson, and doesn't review.

Good call from Stokes. UltraEdge shows he was exactly right.

Across the Tasman sea, play is under way in the third Test of the five-match Australia v India series.

Or rather, it isn't, because they're currently off for rain at The Gabba with Australia on 28-0.

Having won the toss, India captain Rohit Sharma made the bold decision to bowl, on a ground where the side batting first has traditionally prospered.

From 13.2 overs, Australia opener Usman Khawaja has reached 19, while partner Nathan McSweeney is on four.

When the match resumes you can listen to commentary here, so maybe stick it in a second tab while carrying on with us - if that isn't too disorientating.

  10. NZ 150-2published at 45 overs

Edgy but four for Rachin Ravindra to get off the mark.

He plays away from his body to a shorter delivery that bounces and shapes away from Matthew Potts but gets enough on it to clear gully.

Four more, this time caressed through mid-on to take him to 1,000 runs in Tests.

    Latham c Pope b Latham 63 (NZ 142-2)

    A leg-side strangle!

Fired in by Matthew Potts and heading down leg, Tom Latham tries to whip it away but gets a feather through to Ollie Pope.

After drying up the runs with two maidens, Potts now gets his reward.

  13. NZ 142-1published at 44 overs

Ben Stokes is very frustrated as Tom Latham and Kane Williamson are able to scamper quick singles into the covers three times in the over.

Meanwhile, the TV have just put up a graphic that shows Williamson averages 95 in Hamilton. Ominous for the tourists.

  14. NZ 139-1published at 43 overs

Back-to-back maidens for Matthew Potts, this time keeping Kane Williamson tied down by holding a consistent line around off stump.

That's where he wants to be but, for now, Williamson is up to the challenge.

  15. NZ 139-1published at 42 overs

Ben Stokes starts with a good one after drinks, whistling the ball past Kane Williamson's edge as the right-hander had a little nibble at it.

Just a single from the over that ends with Tom Latham getting a thick edge that bounces well short of gully.

    Latham 61, Williamson 17

Maiden over from Matthew Potts but not the most threatening with a couple of balls to Tom Latham sliding down the leg side.

    Time for drinks.

I wouldn't have thought so, Anon, because that would just be wrong.

Will Young (singer) beat Gareth Gates in the final to win the first series of Pop Idol in 2002.

Will Young (cricketer) remains the only New Zealand batter dismissed so far on day one in Hamilton as three runs come from Ben Stokes' over.

I suspect Jimmy (01:16) was making the point that Will Young was the runner up on Pop Idol, not the winner.

    Latham 60, Williamson 16

Short from Matthew Potts and disdainfully hammered through the leg side by Kane Williamson.

More runs in one shot than in the previous 35 balls he'd faced from the England quick...

Williamson is scoring exclusively in boundaries at the moment.

The stats say Matthew Potts is the man to bowl to Kane Williamson.

Now we're going to see what that looks like in reality...
