Will Young has opened in 22 of his 35 Test innings.

His first-class record by position is as follows:

    • Opening - 66 innings, 2150 runs @ 33.07 avg
    • No.3 - 56 innings, 2236 runs @ 48.60 avg
    • No.4 - 77 innings, 3074 runs @ 42.10 avg
  2. NZ 12-0published at 3 overs

Latham scores the first runs off the bat, sending Potts for three through the point region.

The England seamer then thuds a ball into the pads of Young and goes up with a rather nifty appeal - there was a bit of a flourish with the hands.

No-one else on his side seems especially interested - it looks like it was going down leg - and Potts jags a ball past Young's bat to finish the over.

I'm now feeling officially old as I'm now saying goodbye to the 3rd generation of great cricketers... Thank you Tim. You will be remembered with huge appreciation.

  4. NZ 9-0published at 2 overs

Gus Atkinson with the ball at the other end, bowling to Will Young.

The England seamer over-steps with his second ball - which feels like it's been a bit of a problem for both sides in this series - but that's the only run conceded in the over.

  5. NZ 8-0published at 1 over

Potts recovers with a ball that comes very close to the defending edge of New Zealand's skipper, before his final delivery clips the batter's leg and runs away for four through fine leg.

Eight runs so far, none off the bat.

During New Zealand's win over South Africa in Hamilton earlier this year, 14 wickets fell to spin at an average of 29.57 compared to 18 wickets at 27.66 against pace.

That match saw an average of 4.4° of turn for the spinners, the second highest we've seen in a Test in New Zealand during the ball tracking era (since 2007).

New Zealand's move to bring in Santner suggests they're expecting something similar in this Test match.

  7. NZ 4-0published at 0.3 overs

Blimey, that went a long way.

Latham leaves Potts' first two deliveries, with the Durham seamer tumbling over in the follow-through on his first delivery.

His third ball slips out of his hand and flies miles down the leg side for four byes.

Nothing finer than a Test match to bring in the weekend. If I can just ignore the fact I have to go Christmas shopping early doors tomorrow with the better half, I'll have a great night.

Matty Potts, in the side for his first match of the series, will take the first over for England.

He's bowling to New Zealand captain Tom Latham.

    Time to get going.

New Zealand bowler Tim Southee, speaking on TNT Sports before his last Test: "I guess it's a moment in time, or you hope that's what it becomes but it's the right time for a number of reasons.

"We've got a number of young quicks coming through, the depth there is outstanding. I've loved playing and watching their growth.

"Here in Hamilton and it's been a great ride. Hopefully with one more great week.

"[Winning the match] is the focus as it has been throughout the series. It hasn't gone to plan the first two Test matches but any Test you play for New Zealand is a special moment.

"Hopefully we can put in a good performance this week.

"This is a ground I've played a lot of cricket at, it's a special ground for me.

"You want to win every game you play, it would be nice to finish what has been a big Test year for us on a positive note.

"You look at Test cricket, it's always been special and been the pinnacle for me.

"The wins and losses come and go but the memories that stay with you are the times you have away, spending a lot of time away with team-mates, the friendships you form.

"I've been very fortunate to play for a while and I'll take plenty of good memories from the game.

"I'm looking forward to sitting back and watching as a fan."

We've still got a few minutes until the teams get under way, so why not enjoy Stephan Shemilt's awards of the year?

Best win, player, innings, spell - it's all in there.

Strangely "most persistent demander of a tea" isn't though, perhaps because Steph's had that one wrapped up for years.

  12. Farewell, Timpublished at 21:54 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December

After almost 17 years of playing for New Zealand, Tim Southee bids farewell to international cricket with this match in Hamilton.

The recently turned 36-year-old made his debut in all three formats against England in 2008 and has played in 106 Tests, 161 ODIs and 126 T20Is.

Southee has taken four wickets at 61.50 in this series, but you wouldn't rule out him rising to the occasion for his last hurrah.

Matthew Potts in for Chris Woakes is England's only change from XI that won in Wellington.

Potts was England's leading wicket-taker against New Zealand during the 2022 series in England, picking up 14 wickets at an average of 23.28.

He also boasts an impressive record against Kane Williamson in Tests - 3 runs, 32 balls, 3 dismissals - 1.00 average

Before this game, only two of the previous 11 captains to win the toss on this ground had chosen to bat first, so Ben Stokes sticks with the trend. New Zealand, in picking that second spinner, wouldn't have had much choice but to bat first. The sunshine we were promised hasn't materialised. Yet. The forecast for day three isn't clever, either.

England bowler Matthew Potts, speaking on TNT Sports: "I'm very excited to get amongst in here in New Zealand and test myself in conditions that I haven't yet had a go in.

"The previous two pitches had a little bit more grass on top but I don't think it'll be too dissimilar to how it plays in the early stages of the game and might offer a little bit for the seamers.

"I can see it getting progressively flatter throughout the game. It might take a little bit of turn, it seems quite dry and if the sun beats down and the game progresses, there might be a patch or two for the spinner.

"I'd like to take the new ball so we'll see what happens.

"We going in with the mentality that we want to clean sweep and make it 3-0."

England: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ollie Pope (wk), Ben Stokes (c), Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts, Shoaib Bashir

England make one change to their line-up, with Matty Potts rotated in to replace Chris Woakes.

Meanwhile Will Young, New Zealand's player of the series in their away victory over India, comes in for expectant father Devon Conway.

There's also a switch of all-rounders with the spinning Mitchell Santer swapping in for the seamer Nathan Smith, who made his Test debut in the first match of this series.

  17. Postpublished at 21:38 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December

New Zealand captain Tom Latham: "Looks a decent surface, we've seen wickets with a lot more grass and a greener tinge, we're happy to be batting first.

"We know we haven't been at our best and we certainly accept that, but we've got another opportunity.

"I think Tim Southee has played for New Zealand for half his life, we're hoping we can put in a performance and send him off on a high."

  18. Postpublished at 21:37 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December

England captain Ben Stokes: "We're going to have a bowl. We came here this morning, there wasn't a cloud in the sky then as you come towards the toss it gets more overcast. Either way, we would have been happy.

"Matty Potts is in for Chris Woakes. It's nice having a strong squad so just replacing one gun bowler with another.

"We've played some really good cricket and we've played enough against New Zealand to know that they're never going to give up.

"For us, its going out there this week with the same mentality and mindset as the first two games because it's served us pretty well."

Yes, England's year is almost over, but they've got one last job to do before they put their feet up and enjoy some Christmas fare.

They've travelled to Hamilton for the final Test in this three-match tour.

Having already won the series 2-0, they'll now be looking to whitewash New Zealand.
