  1. drinks break

    NZ 46-0published at 14 overs

A first maiden of the day as Will Young doesn't get a bat on Carse's six deliveries.

He does attempt a pull shot at a short ball, but the ball's a little too high for him.

We reach the drinks break with New Zealand just short of 50, having been put into bat.

  2. NZ 46-0published at 13 overs

Changes at both ends with Ben Stokes coming in for Matty Potts.

He over-steps with his first delivery, and Latham adds a further two by clipping the ball off his toes into the leg side.

Those are the only runs from the over, though.

Average length in the first 10 overs of each Test:

    • Christchurch - 6.6 metres (ENG bowling)
    • Wellington - 7.1 metres (NZ bowling)
    • Hamilton - 6.6 metres (ENG bowling)

Regardless of new ball personnel England are more aggressive with their lengths in the first 10 overs than New Zealand.

They've perhaps been slightly unfortunate to not be rewarded this morning, drawing a false shot rate of 26% without making a breakthrough.

  4. NZ 43-0published at 12 overs

First change for England as Carse replaces Atkinson.

His second ball is a half volley and Young smears it through the covers for four.

I would to love to see NZ post a huge total and take the match to a good, long 5 days.

  6. NZ 39-0published at 11 overs

Will Young scores his first run that doesn't come from a four, knocking a single into the leg side.

Potts then delivers another ball that hoops as it comes past Latham and Ollie Pope collects by diving to his right.

I was lucky enough to see Tim Southee's impressive debut at the Napier Test in 2008. I think he took a fifer, then hit a rapid 70+ with some big sixes. I wish him well, but would happily live without him repeating that in this Test.

  8. NZ 37-0published at 10 overs

Over the top of the stumps!

Atkinson bowls to the left-handed Latham from around the wicket and wide of the crease, angling the ball in and just over the poles.

Latham squeezes the next but one delivery off his toes for a single through backward square - the sole run of the over.

  9. NZ 36-0published at 9 overs

    Lucky, lucky, lucky.

Will Young offers a chunky leading edge while trying to turn Potts squares and sees the ball fly past a diving gully for four.

Two deliveries later and he's at it again, edging the other side of gully this time, with the ball slipping between the fielder there and the cordon to reach the ropes.

Since the start of 2020, Tom Latham (31%) and Will Young (30%) have the highest leave percentages against pace among openers in Test cricket - England's wayward lines early on played right into their hands, allowing them to leave 40% of deliveries.

  11. NZ 28-0published at 8 overs

Latham faces the entirety of Atkinson's fourth over, striking the ball through mid-on for two.

Have we ever played 17 Tests in 12 months before? A fascinating year of Test cricket, endlessly entertaining, stupendous statistics, rollercoaster results, fabulous fun. Not sure we're any closer to defining the team but fabulous fun.

For the second over in a row, the final five balls of Potts' over pass without a run scored.

Will Young has scored just the one four from his first 21 deliveries.

  14. dropped catch

Latham dropped on 12published at 6.1 overs

    Just carried!

Potts find's Latham's edge and the ball scuds towards the cordon.

It's moving low and at pace and just about stays in air as it reaches Ben Duckett at third slip, diving to his right and seeing the ball rebound off his hand.

Latham takes a single to move to 13.

  15. NZ 25-0published at 6 overs

Solid over from Atkinson, just a single coming from it as Latham drops one into the covers and rushes through for a single.

I must confess, until the run-up to this Test I'd managed to miss that Tim Southee had earned the nickname "The Sexy Camel."

I don't know the origin of the title - I'm not sure I want to.

Young moves off a duck, striking Potts' first ball (and the 10th he's faced) through the covers for four.

He returns to not scoring for the rest of the over.

Shaping up to be a big day for extras to really put their mark on the game.

  20. NZ 20-0published at 4 overs

Latham has the first boundary of the match, turning Atkinson's delivery through mid-wicket.

His picks up a pair of twos either side of that shot, moving to 11, while Young is still to get off the mark.
