  1. NZ 93-0published at 29 overs

    Play and a miss.

Good bowling from Gus Atkinson, getting the ball to nip back from wide of off and beat Will Young on the inside edge.

Maiden over to start the afternoon session and some early encouragement for England.

  2. NZ 93-0published at 28.1 overs

Gus Atkinson is bowling the first over after lunch and raps Will Young on the pad first ball.

A bit of extra bounce - as we saw plenty of times in the first session - so it was always going well over the top.

Back to Hamilton then and the start of the afternoon session is just a few moments away.

Tom Latham and Will Young will resume their unbroken 93-run stand with England still searching for their first wicket.

PitchViz Bounce Inconsistency (out of 10, higher = more inconsistent)

    • Christchurch - Day 1, Session 1: 1.0
    • Wellington - Day 1, Session 1: 3.1
    • Hamilton - Day 1, Session 1: 4.3

Inconsistent bounce was a feature of the previous Test match in Wellington and it could be a similar story here in Hamilton - the opening session today saw a higher Bounce Inconsistency rating than the first session in Wellington.

There you have it, not quite the fairy tale ending of BBC Sport reader rescues BBC Sport journalist...

But Matt is safe and sound and so you can all (well, it was just Neil, if I'm honest) stop texting in your messages of concern.

BBC Sport in Christchurch (flying home later today)

As I was about to message Russ a very kind man appeared with some petrol from his shed for us, so Russ was not required in the end.

That is a very good question, Neil.

For those of you who weren't reading for this - firstly, why not? - Matt and his wife have been out in New Zealand but their camper van ran out of petrol 30 miles from Queenstown.

We passed on this information and Russ, who lives in Queenstown, got in touch with us to say he should be able to swing by and help.

England rather selfishly won the second Test before this dramatic tale could reach its conclusion.

What happened next? I'm still in the dark about that but we may be able to bring you an answer shortly...

For those who followed the text commentary of the second test, it finished on something of a cliffhanger - did Russ come to the rescue of BBC Sport's Matt Henry and his wife in their camper van? Can you fill us in?

That's certainly what England will be hoping, Alex.

Loving the optimism as well, very much needed at this time of night with another two sessions left in the day.

I guess England having already won the series helps with looking on the bright side, too.

I think 50-7 is a little ambitious but I certainly think we are unlucky not to be going in with them a couple of wickets down. Keep persevering and it'll come this afternoon.

This is the 19th time England have bowled first in a Test during the Bazball era and the first time they have failed to take a wicket in the opening session.

    Thanks, Mike.

A very frustrating morning for England then after winning the toss and choosing to bowl.

They haven't bowled badly and as Mike said, they did go past the bat on a number of occasions.

But also, failed to make Tom Latham and Will Young play as much as they'd have liked.

Work to be done after lunch for the tourists...

Hmm, not quite sure I buy that, Anon (please sign your messages!).

They beat the bat on a few occasions and had that hard chance for Duckett, but England haven't seemed especially threatening.

Curious session, of New Zealand's 93 runs, 56 came from fours, 15 from extras, and just 22 from running up off the bat.

The openers have been happy to leave more often that not - and indeed I'm going to leave myself, here's Sam Drury to take you through lunch and the afternoon session.

Frustrating viewing watching this, NZ 93-0 heading to lunch could easily be 50-7 the way England have bowled.

One last over before lunch for Matty Potts.

Latham hits him into the covers, where Ben Stokes scrambles and restricts the home side to two runs.

The only runs from the over and that's lunch - New Zealand's session, having been put into bat.

  16. NZ 91-0published at 27 overs

    Hmm.

Full ball next up from Stokes and Latham squeezes the delivery down to fine leg for a single.

Replays and ball tracking suggest it was off the pad, and was an umpire's call on lbw.

  17. Not outpublished at 26.1 overs

    Nothing doing.

There's a visible gap between bat and ball and nothing on snicko so I'm not sure what England heard.

    They lose a review.

  18. England reviewpublished at 26.1 overs

Ben Stokes goes hunting for the breakthrough - he thinks he's tickled Latham's edge on the way through to the keeper.

    Let's see...

  19. NZ 90-0published at 26 overs

They almost had Latham here, Graham.

Potts finds the edge with his first delivery, with the ball ballooning between gully and backward point and landing safe.

Four dot balls to Will Young around, you guessed it, another four as he drives confidently through long-off.

That's 1,000 Test runs for Young, in his 35th innings.
