  1. NZ 85-0published at 25 overs

A third maiden for Stokes, bowling to Will Young.

An update on the stats: Young's 38 comes from 74 balls with nine fours, two singles and 63 dot balls.

  2. NZ 85-0published at 24 overs

Just a second single for Young from his 68th delivery, turning Potts into the leg side.

The England seamer has changed end for his second spell and he almost drew the edge of Young earlier in the over, seeing a short-ish ball just ride past the bat.

Very impressed with the Kiwi openers, doing exactly what they should be doing. Ride your luck, and conditions will only get easier.

  4. NZ 84-0published at 23 overs

Maiden from Stokes, with his first ball beating Latham's bat.

The England skipper is 0-16 from his six overs, with two scoreless overs.

New Zealand's last century opening partnership came following on against England in their one-run victory in Wellington in February 2023, with Conway and Latham putting on 149.

  6. NZ 84-0published at 22 overs

The first hint of a chance again as Potts finds a bit of extra bounce, hitting Young high on the bat as he defends on the back foot - a bit of a stinger, those vibrate through the handle.

More dots and fours, as the New Zealand opener strikes from the penultimate ball of the over, lashing Potts past backward point.

He follows that up with an edge between the slips and gully for four more.

  7. NZ 76-0published at 21 overs

This over doesn't start so well, Teddy.

Latham hits the first two balls from Stokes for consecutive fours, firing through long-on and then whipping off his toes to the square boundary, with the ball beating Carse to the ropes.

Encouraging signs for England regarding Ben Stokes bowling. He has bowled quicker than both Potts & Atkinson so far. Looked in decent rhythm so far.

This is the 17th time England have bowled in the first session of a Test in the Bazball era - 5% of deliveries hitting the stumps today is their lowest figure so far.

  10. NZ 68-0published at 20 overs

Young keeps to his dots and fours, seeing himself through five of the former but also lashing Carse's penultimate delivery through mid-on for a boundary.

  11. NZ 64-0published at 19 overs

Four for Latham, cracking Stokes away through square with the ball just beating the fielder to the ropes.

Latham moves to 24 from 64 (two fours), Young is on 25 from 52 (six fours).

  12. NZ 60-0published at 18 overs

Latham strikes a fourth-ball single into the leg side, bringing back Will Young so he can add two more dot balls to his tally.

The second of those is a yorker from Carse that's well blocked by the New Zealand opener.

Clear-ish skies and a pitch expected to take spin as the game goes on. Wasn't this set up to post a score and see Bashir win it in the fourth innings?

    Woops.

Ben Stokes slips and fires a ball does the leg side which goes for four byes.

The England skipper has struggled a bit with staying on his feet in this series - time for longer spikes?

This time last week I was sat on the bank at the Basin Reserve watching the second Test in the sun. Now I’m on the way home, 15 hours into a 16 hour flight to Dubai, following on BBC Sport with every part of my body aching. No offence, but I was having a lot more fun last week!

From Mark, on the way home to Chipping Sodbury.

  16. NZ 54-0published at 16 overs

Young gets the New Zealand scoreboard moving again, smacking Carse's first ball through the covers for four to bring up his side's 50.

He follows that up with an uppish cut past Stokes at gully for another boundary.

Curious innings from the New Zealand opener - 47 balls, six fours, one single, 40 dots.

Can you remember that video knocking around online of the supporters of a European football team (I forget which one) all having signs pointing to the goal because their team hadn't scored in ages? England could do with them pointing to the stumps right now.

  18. NZ 46-0published at 15 overs

Maidens either side of the drinks break as Stokes sends down six dots to Latham.

The England skipper takes a tumble half way through the over, but gets up without any fuss.

Right, I'm glad we've got the Will Young gags out of our system.

I accept they need to be done every time he plays.

I think Will Young should Leave Right Now.
