    Filth.

Shoaib Bashir drags one down and Kamindu Mendis gratefully pummels it for four.

Bashir shakes his head in disgust but in fairness, he's rarely bowled a bad ball in this Test.

  2. SL 126-4published at 37 overs

    Lead by 4

Might be time for Mark Wood to take a rest.

He's still banging it in short, with three men back on the leg side, but it's mostly ill-directed and the batters rarely have to play a shot.

The tips of his gloves were just about level with the stumps. He probably wasn't even aware of it.

It's interesting because Jamie Smith's technique involves him setting himself up and his hands naturally go forward and come back. Every ball could be a no ball!

  5. SL 124-4published at 36 overs

For what it's worth, ball-tracking shows it was umpire's call anyway so England wouldn't have got the wicket.

Sri Lanka take the lead by two.

    Oh!

It's a no-ball because Jamie Smith's gloves were marginally in front of the stumps.

Don't see that too often. England don't lose the review because it's a no-ball, but that's the first blemish on Smith's record in this Test.

  7. England reviewpublished at 35.3 overs

    Hello!

Kamindu Mendis gets in a right tangle, skipping down the pitch to Shoaib Bashir.

The ball evades the stumps but did it hit his pad first? Jamie Smith is very keen, and persuades Ollie Pope to review.

  8. SL 123-4published at 35.2 overs

Managed to get Jack Duckworth and demure in the live text on the same day.

    Something for everyone.

A maiden from Mark Wood, but a wayward one which Angelo Mathews can easily sway around.

The recent partnership Mathews and Kamindu are putting together is needed for Sri Lanka.

  12. SL 121-4published at 34 overs

Shoaib Bashir twirls his way through another probing over, but Angelo Mathews patiently defends.

Sri Lanka are closing in on a (slender) lead.

Kamindu went for another big one. He's deliberately hitting it into the air, a bit dangerous.

  14. SL 120-4published at 33 overs

    Here we go!

Mark Wood is going to keep going with the short stuff and Kamindu Mendis is going to keep taking it on.

He gets a little lucky with one that just drops short of Ben Duckett at deep mid-wicket, before ducking the rest. Smart.

  15. SL 118-4published at 32 overs

    Trail by 4

Half an appeal from Shoaib Bashir, only to realise that Mendis had hit the ground instead of the ball and Jamie Smith dropped it anyway.

    Worth a shout, otherwise.

  16. 6 runs

    SL 116-4published at 31 overs

    Trail by 6

    That'll do!

A ripple of applause around Old Trafford as Kamindu Mendis whacks a short ball from Mark Wood into the stands for six.

Brave, but effective. There is a fielder stationed at deep square but he just watches it sail over his head.

  17. 50 runs

    Immediately into his work.

Angelo Mathews brings up his 42nd Test fifty with a clip to square leg for two.

Mathews makes his way back to the middle with Kamindu Mendis for company.

This session is going until 18:30 BST, so grab yourselves a beverage and settle in.

Mathews has worked hard and scored the runs. He just needs some help from the other end.

Angelo Mathews is providing the resistance for Sri Lanka.

They have batted proactively, in fairness, and kept the game moving particularly after losing those disastrous two wickets at the end of the morning session.
