I just have no idea what is going on in the West Indies dugout at the moment. It feels like there is nothing between the ears.

You've got to give yourself a little bit of time to acclimatise to conditions. We've seen you don't need huge powerplay scores in this tournament.

They are batting like they are expecting the whole pitch to blow up. It is ridiculous cricket.

    Trouble for the West Indies!

Banged in short by Lockie Ferguson and it gets big on Roston Chase.

The right-hander tried to pull the ball in front of square, sends it skyward with a top-edge and Rachin Ravindra takes the catch less than two thirds of the way back to the rope.

New Zealand are flying in the powerplay!

There is some very odd cricket going on. The West Indies are just handing an advantage over to New Zealand at the moment, who haven't had to work too hard for those two wickets at the moment.

It is just crazy, frenetic cricket at the moment and there is no real thinking going on.

  4. WI 20-2published at 4 overs

There was a delay after that wicket as the third umpire checked whether the ball flicked the wire of SpiderCam as it swirled through the air.

It didn't and Nicholas Pooran has to go. Roston Chase is the new batter.

That is a brilliant catch. The ball was swirling around in the air and it was coming over his shoulder.

Big wicket - and it's an excellent catch from Devon Conway!

Nicholas Pooran went on the attack again, this time trying to take on a short ball from Tim Southee.

He gets a top-edge and the ball goes straight up. It is swirling around, though, and Conway does brilliantly to get around to it and take the catch having appeared to have run too far.

  7. dropped catch

Pooran dropped on 13published at 3.4 overs

    WI 20-1

Absolutely nailed by Nicholas Pooran but at a catchable height.

The ball goes like a rocket to Daryl Mitchell at cover and he can't hold on.

Of course, the next ball goes for four...

There are already signs that the ball isn't swinging as much as it was in the first two overs or so. You've got to wait for those loose balls and then put them away.

    That's more like it!

Too wide from Tim Southee and Nicholas Pooran gratefully flays the ball over the covers for four.

It is reckless batting from West Indies so far. They are not backing themselves on a surface that hasn't done a great deal bar a few balls so far.

  11. WI 12-1published at 3 overs

More aggression from Nicholas Pooran but again without much control.

He almost plays this one-handed to leg, no timing but he gets two.

Slightly more control for the rest of the over from this Windies pair but that only brings singles.

    It's streaky... but it's four!

Nicholas Pooran tries to whip the ball leg side, it flies off the outside edge and over the gully region for four.

The first boundary of the game and it takes Pooran past Chris Gayle to become West Indies' leading run-scorer in T20I cricket.

It has been a bit frenetic from the West Indies so far, and I don't really know why.

Surely at this stage of the tournament you've learnt to lower your expectations of what is a good total.

  14. WI 3-1published at 2 overs

Signs of intent from Brandon King as he charges Tim Southee a couple of times.

He can only swat the ball back to mid-off for no run first up before being hit on the thigh pad to finish the over.

Based on these first two overs, batting is not going to be easy on this track.

The nature of these conditions mean you have to hit the ground running and find a way.

They are forcing these superstar hitters to find another way to win games of cricket.

  16. WI 2-1published at 1.2 overs

It has taken until the eighth ball of the innings but we finally have a run off the bat.

Brandon King was beaten first up by Tim Southee but scampers through for a quick single to mid-on next ball.

Nicholas Pooran is the new batter for the co-hosts.

Johnson Charles is bowled by Trent BoultImage source, Getty Images

That is really poor cricket from Johnson Charles. There is absolutely no need at this stage for that kind of shot.

You can afford to give yourself a couple of deliveries. You've got to try and play straight against Trent Boult and that is just a flat-footed hack across the line. It is a needless bit of cricket.

Bowled 'im! What a start for Trent Boult!

Johnson Charles had played and missed a couple of times in the over and will wish this had been the third.

Instead, he gets a thick inside edge onto the stumps as he aims a violent shot through the off side.

    Perfect start for New Zealand.

  20. WI 1-0published at 0.1 overs

Trent Boult has the new ball in hand and bowls the first ball to Brandon King.

There is a strangled lbw appeal as the West Indies openers pinch a leg bye into the leg side.

    We're off!
