That shot tells you it's not that bad a pitch to bat on. It feels like West Indies need to get more than a run-a-ball.

  2. 6 runs

    WI 55-5published at 10.1 overs

First ball back and Sherfane Rutherford demolishes it over the mid-wicket boundary!

Welcome to the attack Mitchell Santner!

  3. Postpublished at 02:27 British Summer Time 13 June

Mitchell Santner has been a big player for New Zealand in recent years.

He's not bowled yet tonight but the left-arm spinner will get things started after drinks.

West Indies looked confused about how to approach the first six overs.

They tried some big shots, then left some alone and ultimately they got frustrated.

  5. drinks break

    WI 49-5published at 10 overs

Halfway through the innings after a good over from Jimmy Neesham, nibbling the ball around a bit.

He keeps the West Indies to just a pair of singles before drinks.

Plenty for both sides to discuss. Not least the last ball of the over that scoots through at shin height. Akeal Hosein can just be glad it wasn't on the stumps!

New Zealand won't want an annoying little partnership with someone like Akeal Hosein edging the score up to 70, 80 or 100 and then the quicks needing to coming back to wrap up the innings.

  7. 6 runs

    WI 47-5published at 9 overs

    Smashed!

A first over of spin in the match, Glenn Phillips tosses it up and Akeal Hosein hammers the ball over long off!

    A very clean hit.

  8. WI 36-5published at 8 overs

Akeal Hosein pushes the ball to mid-off and a misfield allows him to turn a single into two.

Every run is valuable to the West Indies at the moment. Just four come from the Lockie Ferguson over.

  9. WI 32-5published at 7 overs

Nine from the over but another wicket down.

West Indies need something special to recover from here.

Interestingly, they've kept Andre Russell back for now. Sherfane Rutherford and Akeal Hosein are the pair tasked with rebuilding.

That was almost a carbon copy of the ball before so why didn't he try and do the same shot?

It is a very soft dismissal and odd shot.

That is an immediate comeback from Jimmy Neesham and it is a terrific catch from Devon Conway.

The joy is short-lived for Brandon King!

Having nailed the previous ball for a maximum, the West Indies opener pokes at this one on a similar length and nicks it behind.

Another catch for Devon Conway and the co-hosts are in big, big trouble.

At least with that shot Brandon King looked to hit straight.

  14. 6 runs

    WI 30-4published at 6.2 overs

    That'll help the West Indies!

Brandon King was three from 10 balls but comes forward to Jimmy Neesham, reaches forward for the ball but then extends to lift it over long off.

The first six of the match.

  16. WI 23-4published at 6 overs

Powerplay over and the excitement around the stadium has dissipated somewhat after a poor start for West Indies.

New Zealand will be thrilled and have the chance to hammer home their advantage in the next few overs.

It looks like a really nervy performance from West Indies so far.

That is very poor batting from the captain. He's got to set the example but he's just carried on in the same way. That ball is never there to cut.

  19. wicket

    Powell c Conway b Southee 1 (WI 22-4)

West Indies' Rovman Powell is dismissed against New ZealandImage source, Getty Images

    There goes another one!

A bit of a nothing shot from Rovman Powell as he tries a late cut but manages only to guide the ball into the gloves of Devon Conway.

It just came back at Powell, cramping him for room and almost taking the shoulder of the bat.

The skipper is gone as it goes from bad to worse for the West Indies...

  20. WI 22-3published at 5 overs

Another good over for New Zealand, who have responded superbly to a humbling defeat in their opening game.

The bowlers have been assisted by a two-paced pitch and some generosity by the West Indies batters but when you're fighting to stay in a World Cup, you'll take anything you can get.
