'Fantastic' Short's best shots from half-century knock

Australia have yet to really take on Liam Livingstone as well. Two singles apiece for Matthew Short and Marnus Labuschagne in his latest over.

Shot has played a key hand for the Aussie so far in Lahore.

It's quite noticeable that Australia haven't tried to attack Adil Rashid yet.

I think this has been a really great start from Australia. England are playing around with their bowlers at the minute to see which combination will slow them down.

If Australia can continue to put on the pressure, Jos Buttler will have to put on his strike bowlers early.

  3. Aus 118-2published at 18 overs

A risk-averse England effectively snuffed Adam Zampa out of the attack when they batted and it seems Australia are following suit against Adil Rashid.

Rashid finishes his fourth over without a hint of an expansive shot from the Aussie batters. Rashid's four overs have cost 18 so far.

It will be interesting to see how Australia play Liam Livingstone and Joe Root. Will they try and put on some pressure and force Jos Buttler to make a change.

  5. Aus 114-2published at 17 overs

England have to find 10 overs from Joe Root and Liam Livingstone and it is the latter who is thrown the ball first by Jos Buttler.

A solid enough start from the spinner who shows he's willing to mix his pace up.

Brilliant fielding from Brydon Carse down at long-on to deny Matthew Short a boundary after he drilled one straight.

It's been quite noticeable how Marnus Labuschagne has played Adil Rashid. Matt Short had gone off the front foot every time whereas Marnus Labuschagne has gone off the back foot.

It's forcing Rashid to change his deliveries depending who's at the crease.

England have a really interesting field to Matt Short for Adil Rashid.

    There's a straight mid-off, a long-off and a short extra cover.

    They're clearly targeting something.

  8. Aus 109-2published at 16 overs

Matthew Short will not have seen that much of Adil Rashid but he's played him pretty well so far. The Australia batter content to knock him into the gaps for now rather than something more expansive.

I think this game is in the balance. England are going to be pushing hard for wickets. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Jos Buttler make a few changes in the next few overs.

If England can get two more wickets in the next 15 overs, I think they'll be happy.

Australia 103-2 at drinkspublished at 15 overs

It feels finely poised this one... England have a couple of big wickets, but this pair have looked fairly comfortable for Australia.

Time for a swift break to rehydrate.

Poor ball. That's off target, not a good delivery at all from Brydon Carse.

A couple of balls later and Matthew Short makes contact with one his pads from Brydon Carse and glances it fine for four.

    He has a half-century off 47 balls.

  14. Short given not outpublished at 14.3 overs

No bat involved. It's hit the pad so the decision by the standing umpire is overturned.

    However, England lose a review.

Could that one run prove vital?

  15. England reviewpublished at 14.3 overs

Matthew Short produces a text book cover drive off Bryon Carse for four.

A couple of ball later, and Short attempts to work one off his pads and Jamie Smith thinks he's got something on it.

    England decided to review.

A very typical, tidy Adil Rashid over there.

  18. Aus 94-2published at 14 overs

    Target 352

Adil Rashid attempts to build some pressure after Brydon Carse took some tap in the previous over.

Four dots and a couple of singles do his cause, and England's, no harm.

'Big wicket for England!' - Head caught and bowled by Archer for six

Jofra Archer's wicket of Travis Head was only his third wicket in 44 overs in the first powerplay in ODIs since the start of 2023 - when he returned back to the England setup after his injury.

A rare but very crucial wicket of Australia's best batter.

That's a big hit from Matt Short, trademark shot. He's been so fantastic at doing that over the past few years. Brydon Carse will have to find a different way to bowl at him.
