What exactly is the England fan’s acceptable batting approach? If they go at 10 an over and get out then it’s ‘reckless’. If they go at 5s then they’re ‘too slow’. It’s not feasible to expect them to just score at exactly 7.5 and not get out all the time.

Richard have you ever heard of playing the situation or constructing an innings?

    John

RE Richard at 9.56. Would you rather him whack a couple of boundaries and then gift his wicket when we're already four down? He's doing the right thing!

One more single from the over as Bethell nudges towards third.

Returning to my running club - tickets still available for our birthday party on Saturday if anyone wants to come.

It's the biggest event on south-west Manchester's social calendar.

    The boy wonder!

    (Possibly)

Jacob Bethell breaks England's boundary drought, pulling Hardik's short ball round the corner for a flat six through an empty fine leg.

    Lovely shot.

    Eight off 23 now, Richard.

Axar Patel gets his first over of the day, England continue to rotate the strike for a trio of singles.

Four overs without a boundary now.

5 off 19 for Bethell. Honestly where does this "boy wonder" nonsense come from. I have never seen him bat well in an ODI or T20.

This is a huge test now for Bethell. He needs to soak up balls, turn over the strike and target being there until the 40th over at least, but will he get impatient at not finding the boundaries?

He has passed most the tests that have been set him in his fledgling career. The test here is not to try to hit himself into form. He has plenty of time.

Shami continuing here, darting his first ball past Bethell's bat.

The next ball is a dot too, but England take four singles from the remainder of the over.

Jadeja fizzes through another one to take us to halfway. Here's a man with two first names, Mike Peter. He's the secretary of his running club, you know.

Pace for the first time in a while. Mohammad Shami comes into the attack. A wild bouncer, can't be stopped and England run a bye.

Sat watching a T20 last night. Both Hales and Billings could easily make this side better. Just such a lack of consistency and confidence on sub continent surfaces. I fear for our Champions Trophy chances of maligning it even out the group.

It's worth remembering that India skipper Rohit Sharma has been under pressure. This is his first match for India since being, erm, 'rested' for the final Test in Australia. Questions over whether he will make it to England this summer. No Kohli, either. Dodgy knee.

Bethell to score his first professional ton? I'm backing the boy wonder.

Rare loose stuff from Kuldeep. First it's too wide and Buttler cuts for four, then a pie of a half-tracker and Buttler pulls for four. Respite for England. Badly needed.

In his last 20 ODIs, Joe Root has scored 432 runs at an average of just 22.7 with four fifties and no hundreds.

In his previous 20 ODIs prior to this run, he had scored 809 runs at an average of 57.8 with five fifties and two hundreds to his name.

At this point, I'm contractually obliged to point out England bat deep. Adil Rashid is carded at 10. 10 first-class hundreds. You know the rest..

Cards on the table, I'm a massive Jacob Bethell fan. I think England should keep him in the Test side this summer. This is a different gravy of a challenge, though. England under the pump, India spinners all over them.
