England’s challenge is to find the tempo of 50-over cricket. Something that has been conspicuously missing over the last few years. Initial signs are that Salt and Duckett are, tentatively, finding that tempo.

It's just been brought to my attention that someone has left their own stash of 'I Can't Believe It's Not Butter' in the BBC fridge (other butter substitutes are available).

Can someone be so attached to their own spread that they would need to bring it to work? Is it communal?

Dancing from Duckett, clobbering Shami through mid-off, then in no control of one that plops over mid-on for four more.

Re Jav saying Root should knock white-ball on the head. Root is exactly what this white-ball side needs. You see more and more sides now having Test players in their ODI side rather than specialist white-ball batters because they know how to build an innings. Root being the glue of the order at three was a huge reason why England won the World Cup in 2019. As long as he wants to play white ball, he should be in any side.

Harshit, the cricketing equivalent of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is a big lad. He's got shoulders like a man who forgot to take the coat hanger out of his shirt. He's got pace, too. He hurries Salt and hits him in a fleshy bit. Good, hostile over. A maiden.

Something about cricket being played on grass, rather than paper.

Looks a decent England side “on paper”

I had to defrost the car this morning. Comfortably one of the worst household jobs. Not as bad as ironing, but miles worse than mowing the lawn.

Lovely from Duckett. Gorgeous drive through mid-off from Shami for four.

He’s obviously England’s best player but I really feel like Joe should knock the white ball cricket on the head after the champions trophy. We’ve seen how good he is when focusing on red ball. Go and break that run record

Here we go then. Phil Salt gets England moving with a couple of boundaries. The first is a slash through the off side, nice shot. The second, hack behind square, is more algricultural.

  10. Eng 3-0published at 1.3 overs

Nice shot from Ben Duckett to finally get England under way. Cut for three.

Harshit Rana shares the new ball, on his ODI debut. He's in the actual XI, not a sub...

  12. Eng 0-0published at 1 over

There was quite a lot of slashing and heaving from Salt in that over, but no runs. Lively, noisy crowd in Nagpur.

  13. Eng 0-0published at 0.5 overs

    Swinging both ways, actually.

  14. Eng 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Hint of swing there. Salt misses with a big drive.

Here we go. Mohammad Shami has the ball. Phil Salt on strike. Two slips.

The plyers are heading our for the anthems, lining up in the scorching Nagpur sun. There's other cricket today, too. Australia have started their second Test in Sri Lanka and Ireland are playing an ODI in Zimbabwe. Keep an eye on the scores here.

The last time England won an ODI series in India was in 1984 - none of the players in the England ODI squad were born back then. England have lost each of their last six ODI series' (starting from 2006) against India away from home, they have won only five and lost 22 games in them. Since the start of 2006, England have won only 17% of their ODIs against India in India - their worst record against any opposition away from home.
