Tell you what, it's an absolute pleasure being on the desk today, in the presence of chief cricket writer Stephan Shemilt and his protégé Matthew Henry.

Last night I went to the theatre to see "The Shark is Broken", a play set in the down time on the set of Jaws, written by and starring the son of Robert Shaw, who plays his father.

In fifty years time I imagine my own child will be playing me in "The Text Console is Broken", a hit play based on the interactions between the three of this morning.

Cultural tastemakers at the Lowry Theatre will sit enraptured by a re-enactment of Stephan's advice for playing the free hit in fantasy football.

England have been bowled out 48% of the times in ODIs since the start of 2022. Amongst full-member nations, only Zimbabwe (62%) and West Indies (49%) have a higher percentage of getting bowled out in this timeframe.

Matt Barron: I can't imagine that India will need more than 30 overs to chase this.

England have been bowled out on 21 occasions in 44 ODI innings since the start of 2022.

That figure was 20 between 2016 and 2021 in 98 innings.

Every time we watch Jacob Bethell bat he impresses me. He plays with such a calmness. The more exposure and experience he has, the more he's going to grow into his role.

I think the impressive thing is his ability to have so many different gears when he's such a young player. It's probably because he's grown up playing different formats.

He's now working out when and how to utilise how to use those gears. The more he bats with more experienced players, the more he's going to absorb that knowledge. I only see him improving.

It is hard to see how England can defend such a meagre total on a pretty true and benign surface.

I think England had a couple of opportunities. Just a couple of collapses there from good bowling and a bit of friendly batting from England, letting India through the door.

If the England bowlers can use the surface and find early wickets, they could be in with a chance.

India have lost only two ODIs at home chasing less than 250 runs in their last 36 chases. The last one coming against South Africa in Lucknow in 2022 where they fell short by nine runs chasing 250.

Ravindra Jadeja finishes with figures of 3-26, getting the key wickets of Root and Bethell lbw and then bowling Rashid.

Debutant Harshit Rana also took 3-53 on ODI debut, seeing Duckett caught superbly by Jaiswal before Brook and Livingstone edged behind.

Buttler and Bethell got half centuries then got out for England, while Phil Salt hit a speedy 43 from 26 from the top of the order.

A scrappy display from England. After Buttler’s dismissal, there were some horribly cheap wickets. A lack of in game intelligence has cost England around 50 runs.

Liam Livingstone, Brydon Carse and even Saqib Mahmood at the very end failed to play to the situation with initially Bethell going well at the other end and then Archer left stranded.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 47.4 overs

Mahmood st Rahul b Kuldeep 2 (Eng 248 all out)

    Innings over.

Kuldeep wraps up England's effort in his final over, having Mahmood stumped by KL Rahul.

Tossed up and beaten in the flight - the visitors head to the dressing room having left 14 deliveries on the field.

    India will chase 249.

  12. Eng 247-9published at 47.2 overs

    Lashed for four!

Archer gets back on strike and smacks Kuldeep for four through square leg.

  13. Eng 242-9published at 47 overs

Saqib Mahmood walks out, looking to get Jofra Archer on strike as much as possible presumably.

Perhaps not, he retains the strike by taking a final-ball single to long-on.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 46.4 overs

    Rashid b Jadeja 8 (Eng 241-9)

    Bowled sweeping...

Rashid tries a choppy one into the leg side and has his stumps splayed - perhaps a bit of extra bounce, a touch quicker too.

One wicket to go for India.

  15. Eng 239-8published at 46 overs

India remove Hardik after his expensive over, back comes Axar.

Rashid clips a two down the ground, then works a single into the covers.

  16. Eng 236-8published at 45 overs

Jadeja reels it back in for India, sending down a maiden to Jofra Archer.

Extremely frustrating at this stage of the innings.

Talk of 400, then 300, then 260. 250 looks less than hopeful now. Eight wickets lost for less than 150 runs at less than five an over is beyond poor.

  18. Eng 236-8published at 44 overs

    Four more!

Archer sears a drive past the ankles of the umpire and straight to the ropes.

He then pulls the final ball of the over out to the boundary sweeper at square leg for a strike-retaining single.

16 from the over - vital.

  19. 6 runs

    Eng 231-8published at 43.4 overs

There's the big hits a few England batters have been hunting!

A couple of short balls from Hardik and Jofra Archer lashes him for a four and a six over long-on then square leg.

  20. Eng 220-8published at 43 overs

Jofra Archer the penultimate man out of the hutch for England.

He defends the last two balls of Jadeja's over.
