It is a big ask for a relative newcomer to marshal the tail, especially in alien conditions, but if Bethell can make something of this, it could be the making of him. Big test.

To offer a bit of defence for this strategy, Alex, if they don't accelerate at some point they'd near definitely lose anyway - this pitch looks pretty benign.

They have been nurdling for quite a while - and continue to do so here, a couple more singles to end Kuldeep's over.

Why don't England think? There's so much time left in the innings. Nurdle it about, try and get to a total worth defending! Brainless.

    Eng 209-7

No spikes visible on the technology, decision overturned.

A good review for England - strange that Rashid took a while to decide whether to check it when he hadn't hit it.

  5. Umpire reviewpublished at 40.3 overs

    Umpire's finger is up.

Adil Rashid goes to cut Kuldeep and KL Rahul goes up for the catch.

England review - they've got two left, no reason why you wouldn't.

  6. Eng 206-7published at 40 overs

    Here's Adil "10 first-class hundreds" Rashid.

(the last of those must have been about ten years ago)

He defends the last ball of the over.

    Carse b Shami 10 (Eng 206-7)

    Bowled him!

The pace of Shami is enough to account for Brydon Carse, who goes for a swipe over long-on and sees his stumps up-rooted.

They'd brought up the fielders at mid-on and mid-off, enough to tempt Carse into playing the shot.

  8. Eng 200-1published at 39.1 overs

Thank you, Freddie - and as I said, if you really want to show thanks, tickets for my running club birthday party remain competitively priced.

Bethell brings up England's 200 with a push into the covers off the returning Mohammed Shami.

Your commentary today is exemplary, and is a tremendous aid to my morning procrastination efforts: thank you.

Kuldeep to take the 39th, couple of singles from it.

England really are struggling to find the boundaries - Bethell's 38 from 53 has featured just three of them.

Get Eoin Morgan in this set-up. It’s clear that nuance is needed and England don’t seem to know it.

Chris Smith: No idea how Livingstone is still in the England white-ball set-up. Last recognised “batsman” miles away from a competitive total & seemingly gets bored & attempts to hit a 100m 6. Another battering awaits for Baz

That back-of-a-length or the hard length region has troubled Liam Livingstone in the past as well. He has been dismissed six times off that length against pacers in ODIs at an average of just 13.5. Indian pacers in particular have used it well against him, dismissing him three times in six innings in ODIs while conceding only 19 runs.

    Swept away.

Bethell turns Kuldeep's final delivery away past fine leg and to the ropes.

Eight runs from the over - England need a few more of those.

If Buttler can count himself unfortunate, Livingstone I’m afraid has only himself to blame. A shot that he shouldn’t have considered before the last five overs has been his downfall. Horrible stuff.

Into the tail, as Brydon Carse walks out for England.

Perhaps a little harsh, Carse averages 24 from his 19 ODIs.

He has to duck under a Harshit bouncer that ultimately gets called for a wide.

Caught behind going for the big shot!

Liam Livingstone, perhaps conscious that England need to up the rate, charges Harshit Rana, trying to balloon the ball over mid-wicket with a mighty pull.

It's a bit head-in-the-air and he doesn't connect, the ball taking a top edge to carry through to KL Rahul behind the stumps.
