It's amazing isn't it how India are so far ahead in this Test match and yet they know what England can do.

  2. Ind 98-2published at 22 overs

Shubman Gill was given a generous welcome by the Edgbaston crowd when he walked to the middle.

He gets off the mark from his second ball from Chris Woakes with a flick into the leg side for a single.

For all the people criticising England's bowling unit, who exactly should they pick? With the likes of Gus Atkinson and Mark Wood injured, and Jofra Archer not fully match fit, this is just about the best attack available.

Bowlers are tired and especially after the frustrations of the edges through the gaps. He's bowled in the 90mph range so a lot of credit to Brydon Carse this morning.

Nair caught behind off Carse for early England breakthrough

    Brydon Carse deserves that!

He's looked the most threatening bowler and just when it looked like India had started to look a bit more comfortable he draws Karun Nair into a drive.

The ball does just enough and Nair ends up edging into the gloves of Jamie Smith.

    England get their reward.

If you are set 520 to win with an hour and a day, I am playing for a draw. You play normally. If you tried to win the game, you'll lose it.

  7. Ind 96-1published at 20.3 overs

Telling stats from our friends at CricViz. This feels like the best period to be a bowler.

Brydon Carse strays on to the pads of Karun Nair, who comfortably clips it to the boundary for four.

The India number three follows it up with an aesthetically-pleasing cover drive for another boundary.

    Tension eased for Inda.

In the first half-hour of this morning session, India played 24% false shots - the most for any session in this Test match - and only 5% of the balls were well connected or played in control. A wicket seems to be just around the corner for England here.

India's batting collapses in Leeds papered over the cracks of a bang average bowling unit. Worrying signs.

He didn't play a shot as it was quite high. It hit him outside the line but I don't think it was going to hit the stump, it was quite high.

  11. Ind 88-1published at 20 overs

KL Rahul decides to leave a delivery which nips back from Chris Woakes and is struck on the top of his pad.

England appeal, but it has not come back enough for Ben Stokes to review it.

Stokes, stood at mid-off, gives Woakes a pat as he walks back to his mark.

What's the goal for India today? Around 520 in the bank with an hour to play in the day. India in a fantastic position and this morning is about not losing wickets but consolidating.

Brydon Carse's asking good questions with the ball here, he is creating a little bit of opportunity but nothing quite landed.

  14. Ind 86-1published at 19 overs

Brydon Carse looks a menace here.

A jaffa from the tall England seamer in the corridor of uncertainty with the fourth ball of the over beats the outside edge of Karun Nair's back foot defensive prod.

Next ball, Nair drives at a wider one which flashes behind square for four.

Looks as though KL Rahul can decide and decipher cues from the bowler's hand. That's the sign of a great batter.

  16. Ind 81-1published at 18 overs

A maiden from Chris Woakes keeps the pressure on these two India batters. England are building a bit of pressure here.

Would be interested to see what WinViz thinks this morning, given how good the pitch is looking.

We've just said it in the previous over, they've spread out there and it's gone between straight between Joe Root and Harry Brook. That's a bad miss, probably Root should have had a go at this. It has gone perfectly in the gap.

You've got to put those out of your mind because it is so easy to sulk and think that it's not our day. There's still so much to play today and we can't have that mentality.

  20. Ind 81-1published at 17 overs

Harry Brook and Joe Root end up looking at each other like Alas Smith and Jones after Karun Nair edges one between first and second slip - stood far apart - off Brydon Carse and the ball races away to the boundary for four.

Has Ben Stokes been a little bit too conservative this morning?
