  1. Eng 43-2published at 9.3 overs

    Clean striking from Will Jacks.

Jacks backs away to give himself room against Sean Abbott and decisively strikes a powerful drive straight down the ground for four.

  2. Eng 38-2published at 9 overs

    Jeez! Talk about decisiveness.

Harry Brook marches down the wicket and absolutely smashes Josh Hazlewood through the covers with a flat-batted slap.

Brute power from the England skipper.

It's a good over that from Sean Abbott. It looks like there is still a lot of movement out there. But luckily, England have one of our best Test match batters out there, so he can hopefully read the situation well.

I play at the beautiful Deer Park for Filleigh CC on the Castle Hill (Foertescue) estate in North Devon. The original castle is no longer standing, but there is a small fortified folly and the rather grand and palatial estate house. (We've gone unbeaten this season in the league and won a T20 cup.)

Played at Royal Household CC, in the grounds of Frogmore. Can see Windsor castle from the back of the pitch.

I don’t have my own picture, but Martinstown CC near Dorchester is in the valley by Iron Age hill fort Maiden Castle.

  5. Eng 32-2published at 8 overs

    Sean Abbott replaces Josh Hazlewood.

He digs one in short which Harry Brook has a bit of a half-hearted flash raising the interest levels of the Australian fielders in the in-field.

Brook's defence has looked solid and he's driven confidently, but perhaps needs to temper the wafting at this stage of England's innings.

Lovely straight drive from Harry Brook. That would have been two for Australia in the first innings. But the outfield has hopefully quickened up a little bit and now, maybe we can just knock it and it'll go for a four!

  7. Eng 31-2published at 7 overs

    Target 305

Harry Brook has a steely determination as he drives Mitchell Starc through mid-off with a degree of confidence to pick up his first boundary.

A couple of balls later and Will Jacks, with an almost Kevin Pietersen-like flamingo leg flourish, flicks Starc square but there's a fielder there and he can only pick up single.

It's always going to be tricky for England to be facing this experienced duo of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. Their only let-off is that Adam Zampa misses out due to an illness today.

  9. Eng 25-2published at 6 overs

There was perhaps some stifled guffawing at the pedestrian nature of Steve Smith's half-century earlier.

However, you sense England need a Smith-esque innings to give themselves a platform if they are to have a chance of getting within striking distance of this total.

England skipper Harry Brook is off the mark with a defensive dab through the vacant gully region.

That Mitchell Starc over in which he dismissed Phil Salt and Ben Duckett was the first time a bowler has dismissed England's openers in the same over in over 10 years - Bhuvneshwar Kumar of India the last to do that in September 2014 at Edgbaston.

  11. Eng 23-2published at 5 overs

Will Jacks rather fortunate as he chips Mitchell Starc over the in-field via an inside edge of his bat and picks up a couple of runs.

He's a lot more convincing off the penultimate ball of the over, though, as Jacks wristly works one off his pads through mid-wicket for four.

How about Cholmondeley cricket ground in Cheshire in the grounds of the castle?

  13. Eng 16-2published at 4 overs

Ben Duckett's blade was not straight, and his head was not in a good position, which is always the sign of a batter who is not in control of the shot.

Will Jacks has started well, biffing Josh Hazlewood through mid-on for four.

The sun doesn't get in the way of Glenn Maxwell this time. He takes that one and Australia are all over England!

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 3 overs

    Duckett c Maxwell b Starc (Eng 11-2)

Deary me. This has not started well.

Another slightly strange dismissal as Ben Duckett plays a jabbed defensive shot with a hint of drive at a full delivery from Mitchell Starc.

The ball skews off the edge and loops up to Glenn Maxwell at backward point and he takes a routine catch.

Two in the over for Starc. England in big trouble.

Soft dismissal! Phil Salt almost can't believe it. He's not had a great series so far. Catching practice really!

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 2.1 overs

    Salt c Short b Starc 0 (Eng 7-0)

A seven-ball duck for Phil Salt as his lean streak continues.

The England opener plays an awkward, and quite premediated, shot to the legside and is caught by the diving Matthew Short.

It was not a particularly threatening ball from Mitchell Starc, but Salt has nudged it into the hands of mid-wicket and is on his way.

It's a brave shot to play, isn't it? But it's bounced just in front of the rope and is given a four.

  19. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

Ben Duckett plays and misses to a shorter ball from Josh Hazlewood, then next ball plays an audacious ramp for four over the head of wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

Absolutely brilliant from the left-handed opener.

Cameron Green indicated a six but replays showed it had just bounced in front of the boundary sponge.

  20. Eng 3-0published at 1.2 overs

Josh Hazlewood with a no-ball gives England their first run on the board. Ben Duckett skies a top edge with a pull the resulting free hit for a couple.
